May 10th 2015 -- Mets 7, Phillies 4

Sunday in Philly, Curtis Granderson’s 2 run homer in the top of the 5th put the Mets ahead for good and Bartolo Colon earned his major league leading 6th win on the year; the Mets beat the Phillies 7-4.  

The Phils got first blood in the bottom of the third when their starting pitcher Chad Billingsley homered down the left field line to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. 

The Mets tied the game in the top of the 4th when Lucas Duda stroked his 10th double of the year down the right field line. Wilmer Flores’ RBI single brought him home. 

The Phils took their last lead in the bottom of the 4th. Chase Utley hit his first double of the year and was singled home by Brady Sizemore. 

Grandy’s homer made it 3-2 in the 5th. In the 6th, Flores doubled and scored on Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ double. Nieuwenhuis stole 3rd and scored the Mets 5th run when Cameron Rupp’s peg went into left field.  In the 7th the Phils greeted Colon with 3 straight hits.  Cesar Hernandez’ single brought home Sizemore and it was 5-3.  Erik Goeddel then relieved Colon and yielded a sac-fly to Jeff Francoeur to make it 5-4.  Alex Torres came on, and after walking Ben Revere and hitting Chase Utley to load the bases with 2 out. He got Ryan Howard to ground to Duda to retire the side.

 In the 8th Pinch hitter Johnny Monell doubled home Nieuwenhuis and Ruben Tejada and it was 7-4 Mets.

The Mets amassed a season high 14 hits on the game. Daniel Murphy went 3 for 5, Flores went 2 for 4, Granderson had 2 hits and his 3rd homer on the year, Duda had 2 hits as well.  Carlos Torres pitched a scoreless 8th,  Jeurys Familia pitched the 9th for this 13th save on the year (tied for MLB lead with the Yankees Andrew Miller) Colon went 6 allowing 8 hits 4 runs (all earned), once again walked no one and struck out 8. He’s now 6-1. Billingsley takes the loss falling to 0-2.

The Mets take 2 of 3 from the Phils on the road. The Mets improve to 20-11 on the season and are now 7-8 on the road.

Monday it’s off to Wrigley field to start a 4 game set with the Cubs.  The game starts at 8:05 PM EST. Jacob deGrom (3-3 2.95) goes for the Mets.  Jon Lester (2-2 4.04) goes for the Cubs.

I'll take the victory, but...

I simply can't support TC's decision to keep A. Torres in the game with bases loaded and down by only one. It was the second game in a row he couldn't find the plate and this wasn't the time to let him solve his problems.

The Mets got lucky here with a very weak lineup.

He's a key pitcher on the staff, sometimes you've got to show your support. Getting yanked two nights in a row might have been problematic.

I like Torres a lot. He's very tough to hit. Yes, a history of control problems that won't disappear any time soon.

I like the decision and love the outcome. But, yes, squirmy to watch.

His double aside, Kirk is still hitting.111. He better be on a short leash. Mack's guy Castellanos, righty or not, might make more sense.
