From The Desk...

Good morning.

Yesterday’s results – 2018 second round draft pick, Simeon Woods-Richardson, pitched in his first pro start: 3-IP, 2-H, 0-ER, 1-BB, 4-K. The 17-year old has now pitched six scoreless innings in three games (0.00). Yes… the 17-year old… in Vegas, SS/3B Christian Colon went 1-4, HR, .296. Will he ever get another shot? SS Andres Gimenez (2-4, R, double, .268) continues to impress at an affiliate level he shouldn’t be playing in for two years… St. Lucie’s Mike Gibbons gave up only one hit over 7.1-IP…

Injury News – Once pitching prospect, Cameron Planck, is down for the season again. The 20-year old former 2016 11th round draft pick came with an unsingable tag. Turns out the tag has turned to unpitchable. In three seasons, he has pitched in one inning (2018) where he never even got an out before being shut down again… he has now been diagnosed with an injury to the ‘Anterior capsule’ of his pitching shoulder. You might remember this injury from the Johan Santana days… with the good news from the doctors on Steven Matz, the Mets intelligently decided to rest Matz for a few starts to give him some time to strengthen and heal… Phillip Evans showed up in the clubhouse, both on crutches and the disabled list non-displaced tibia fracture…

Good Fundies Brian - With that said, I am seeing a dishearteningly large # of people turning on Steven Matz right now. He had a bad start. It happens. He's been fine this year. It's weird that people are burying Matz with essentially an identical stat line to Wheeler. Matz's ERA was lower than Wheeler's every day of the season until Tuesday. It was 3.38 through July 12th. That's a heck of a year.

Roster Moves – Recently acquired RP, Bobby Wahl, was promoted to the Mets yesterday. The 26-year old has pitched outstandingly for AAA-Las Vegas, going 1.69/0.94 in 4-games, 5-innings pitched (8-Ks, 13.50-SO9)… RP Jacob Rhame was sent to Vegas to make room for Wahl… Mets signed another Luis Santana. This one is a 16-year old outfielder from the Dominican…  and then came the ultimate designation. OF Kevin Kaczmarski. Here is a team that has so little upper level talent in the outfield and they DFA the 26-year old because all he ever did was  hit .357/.421/.444 for AAA-Las Vegas this season. He’s hit at every level and has three more controllable years. So, what happened here? Was it a chemistry? Did something happen in the Vegas clubhouse? I don’t expect him to clear waivers so we will probably never know. God, it’s getting tougher to do this every day.

Congrats to Luis on his streak. Impressive.

I am hoping Bobby Wahl is a good Bobby Parnell.

Bashlor and Tim Peterson found out how real it can be in the big leagues.

I might have been the only person in the Mets Twitter world that thought Wahl was a tremendous steal.

I would love to see Gsellman-Smith-Whal as next year's 7-8-9

Is it possible that after Kaz’ call up to the bigs where he was totally ignored on the bench, he went to management and told them that if they don’t intend to give him a chance, or view him as a prospect, they should just release him? Wouldn’t have been the worst move by him. As you note, he’s very likely to get picked up by someone.

I'm hoping he's not Josh Smoker or Jack Leathersich.

Adam -

It makes no sense to me and moves me closer to Mets retirement.

Odd maneuver with Kaz........as you stated, there has to be more to the story.

This team is taking the fun out of baseball!

I think we are all suffering from what's going on this year. I know it's tough for me to keep writing about this shite every day.

I'm thinking of adding a New York Giants post once a week.

I'm sure Reese could kick in a Jets weekly post.

Or should we just wait this period out?

Thoughts?

Mack it just flat out wears you out and to see the resurgent Braves and Phils and were just falling further behind by the day. The only hope is that we get a real good GM (Jeffy don't screw this up PLEASE!) and players like Gimenez, Alonzo, Kelenic, Dunn etc. make it worth the wait. To see the likes of Soto, Acuna, Albies, Newcomb, Hoskins, Nola and more you can't help but look back on the Sandy Alderson error errr era and wonder what could have been. Mack we're getting to old for this s++t.

As long as we don’t do the Knicks.

On Some of the Younger MiLB Mets

It's really not an easy assessment to judge the kid players too tightly, especially when they are below the AA level. They are merely cutting their teeth at the lower A Ball level and learning themselves and this game. So I never go there, I never follow anything below AA Binghamton really. It's too dreamy-eyed a thing for me.

Look at Kirk Nieuwenhuis, age 31 now, just released by the Mariners. Had great promise coming thru the Mets farm system, and fairly high level skills, at first. But he is probably done now. In his six MLB seasons, Kirk batted just .231 overall. Nothing terrific despite all the nice catches and occasional homeruns.

Reports recently said that he has raised his strikeout level too much, and is no longer a use to the Mariner team. Some team may pick him up, but why.

If my call...

I'd print out a huge sign for the Mets Club House wall over the door somewhere inside that read, "Wanted, a Closer with desire, skills and effort. Are you up to it?"

I have watched all the relievers here now on these NY Mets, and to be frank, to my eyes this reliever has not stepped up yet to make this Closer role their own. But someone could soon. We'll see.

I think the end of this season marks the last chance for someone here now to step up. Then, the Mets will have to go outside their own team or take another look down in their minors for this Closer.

I'd be totally elated with a lefty Closer though. Haven't had one here who was really good since Billy Wagner. To me, the Mets are too righty dominant right now. This would definitely help things.

The Bull Pen Going Forward

I really do think the NY Mets have some decent arms here now in their 2018 pen. Three or four. But they also have like five or six more good ones combined down in AAA Vegas and AA Binghamton.

A few I am thinking of...

Drew Smith was solid here for the Mets last night. he's up from Vegas. No great stats really in his one inning of relief last night, but he stabilized the game beautifully and did well against the Marlins batters he faced.

Tyler Bashlor is just a little raw still, but definitely has the arm and skill set to succeed here. He is starting to use his second pitch more too, and if he can continue using it optimally, that pitch could aptly set-up his dominant fastball and make Tyler a definite "Bull Pen Warrior" going forward. Tyler naturally attacks the opposing team's batters, which makes him stand out wherever he pitches.

Jamie Callahan I think has been out all season, but he will get notice once he gets back whole again. He's good too. Then, I like Dave Roseboom, a lefty, who has been putting it altogether for the past couple of months down in Binghamton. And there are others down in the Mets farm system as well. Guys like Ryder Ryan, Eric Handhold, fireballer Gerson Bautista...

I am not certain what the plans are right now on Kilome. But he will define his role for this NY Mets team. Ten strikeouts in just 6.2 innings last night is a good indication.

From a number of apple barrels, you can often pick the best apples. But it will probably come down to who closes for this team in 2019.

For me, it is too early to tell on Bobby Wahl. I need to see him the rest of 2018 first. My early on opinion on him is...maybe. Not like when Dan Marino quarterbacked the Dolphins his rookie season, and came out screaming his very first game in Pre-season. But there is hope with Wahl.

Drew Smith, Tyler Bashlor, Robert Gsellman, and Bobby Wahl so far I think. Need three more. Hoping for Gerson Bautista and Dave Roseboom to step up. Then see where Jamie Callahan is too.

Maybe something like that? Get the very best arms in the bull pen.

In my estimation, what more could the NY Mets need in 2019?

First off, the Mets are now just 15 games out of first place. I'd like the team and its manager and coaches to play the rest of 2018 as if they were in the Playoff Run. This would mean a lot to us Mets fans. It would show us something that we need to see.

Secondly, see which injured Mets players could actually be ready for 2019 and not just limping again. Then make the player personnel adjustments based around that.

Thirdly, I think that the Mets have the hitters now on this team, but they will probably need possibly one or two more homerun hitters added into this mix. One at the catcher position definitely, and then possibly one at third base, although Todd Frazier did have two hits last night I noticed.

But I will see how Flores and McNeil do the rest of the way to decide this. Both hit homeruns really and both are batting over .270 at current.

The pitching rotation is pretty well set I think. The four righties with Noah, Jake, Zach, Corey and then they will need someone solid from the left side added in new. Can go with Matz, but his own history of injury and lost game time, is a problem now.

If the Mets wanted to extend the rotation out to six, they have these pitchers here as well in Dunn and Crismatt. Both should be in Spring Training in 2019.

Trash Talkin'

The Boston Red Sox are true AL Championship material this season, along with probably Houston. The A's and Cleveland are not dead yet either, please be advised.

The Red Sox were down like five runs last night in their game with Baltimore, but took the game 19 -12 anyway. I think Baltimore since hotshot Machado left town, have played a lot better I have noticed. Everyone else is playing better in Machado's absence.

The Red Sox simply have too many outstanding batters for the Yankees to catch up to and their rotation is better too. Aaron Judge still isn't right with the wrist injury and it still is bothering him some. A reasonable guess here might be September 2nd for his return? Hey, can Sonny Gray play the outfield?

Simply said, Yankee fans will have to be patient until 2019, that's when it could easily be their year. So all you really old NY Yankees fans out there need to start doing more speed walking and taking more old man vitamins more regularly, so that your old tired arse can make it to October 2019!
