COLUMBIA, SC – Columbia used a surge of offense in the middle innings of Wednesday’s game against West Virginia to win the series finale, 3-1. Hansel Moreno doubled twice, scored a run and plated another to spur the Fireflies to the victory.
Moreno’s valor in the sixth and seventh frames helped erase a one-run deficit. Moreno used his speed to score from second base on a routine ground out in the sixth and then plated an insurance run with a two-bagger in the following frame.
Columbia’s pitchers were splendid as well. Starter Zac Grotz allowed just one run over six innings and struck out five. Then relieverConner O’Neil (W, 5-0) picked up his fifth win of the season after chucking three scoreless frames. O’Neil struck out five and retired all nine hitters he faced.
Also worth noting, Scott Manea finished Wednesday’s game with a pair of hits and ended up reaching base safely three times.

Reasons to Believe
If I am adding things up right, the NY Mets have approximately $34.0 million of salary coming off their books for the 2019 Mets season due to their own free agent list.
Now subtract new contracts for the players with contracts ending at the end of this season, and maybe this could allow the team to get a really superlative new player in here for 2019.
One phenomenally talented player more could make things here work exceptionally well, change the culture, provided of course that players like Yoenis Cespedes and the younger best Mets newbies can be contributors to the 2019 season, and stay healthy all season long.
Remember when Manager Mickey Callaway came in here? I do. One of the reasons that he was brought in for 2018 they said, was to keep the Mets pitching rotation healthy through a new and innovative exercise program. Overall, and aside from the more minor injuries this season like fingers and hoof and mouth disease, Mickey has been entirely successful with this new approach program. I say kudos to Mickey!
On the defense side of this equation, Bruce, Frazier, and Cespedes did not fare as well as the rotation.
Maybe they too need a special program too, although what Yoenis has been suffering from this season with the feet, really may date back to fifteen years ago just as he stated it did. But this could help anyway. An exercise and stretching program tailor made for each of these three players. Svelte and stronger too.
I have watched Todd Frazier for years. Was always appreciating his homerun ability, his bat speed, even though he was not yet here a Met. But I noticed that somewhere along the way, his overall body size changed. As we age, we have to work harder in the weight room just to stay the same. All 30+ year old athletes need to pay attention to this, as they move on in their respective careers. But the truth here is simply that each one can be optimal again.
But in any event, there could be a superlative player out there, maybe on the 2019 free agent list, who is both young enough and good enough to change up this offensive equation and make 2019 and beyond more fun and optimal.
I really get frustrated with these people that write under the identification of 'anonymous'.
I appreciate that they may want to keep their privacy. Maybe they are someone famous and just don't need the publicity on this site.
Maybe they are a writer on another Mets blog and want to just share their thoughts privately.
Or maybe they are just shy.
The shame is we here have nothing to identify them by or separate them from others that write under the same name.
Look, joining the site is no big deal. It's simple to do and does not mean you have to become a writer here. You just join and either add your name or the 'handle' you want to write under.
A lot of people use handles.
Long time reader 'Hobie' is really names Conrad.
Writers 'Joey Bats' and 'Eddie Corona' are handles, not real names.
Even Sandy Alderson writes for us here under a handle...
