From The Desk

Good morning.

Yesterday’s results – DSL-2 CF, 17/yr. old Eduardo Salazar continues to rake: ,291. 4-5, R, RBI, He now has nine hits in his last 14-ABs. 17/yr. ol DSL-1 CF Adrian Hernandez is starting to get his game together: 2-4, 2-R, .260… 18/yr. old 22nd round draft pick, SS Jaylen Palmer, continues to heat it up for the GCL-Mets: 3-4, R, RBI, .302. Last 10 games: .342… In Las Vegas, 1B Peter Alonso raised his AAA BA to .234… In Binghamton, SP Justin Dunn put up a winner: 6=IP. 3-H, 1-ER, 9-K, 3.36… In St. Lucie, catcher Ali Sanchez continues to make a case for a promotion: 2-4, .291… in Columbia, SP Luc Rennie finally showed he was human: 5-IP, 9-H, 5-ER, 1.93… in Brooklyn, RP Ryley Gilliam continued his ‘no earned runs for the season’ run: 1-IP, 0-R, 2-K, 0.00… and in Kingsport, 3B Mark Vientos is starting to show that he is going to be the star we hoped he would turn into when we drafted him: 3-5, 2-R, double, 8th HR, .291.

Roster Moves –  The Mets have signed infield Dylan Tice and assigned him to Low-A-Brooklyn. The 25/yr. old was a 36th round draft pick, in the 2015 draft, by St. Louis. He played two seasons in the Cards chain and, frankly, never hit badly: 2015: .280… 2016: 3 teams - .296. He was then released and hit .296 for the Rockland Bolders in the independent CanAm League. This year, for Kansas City of the American Association Indy league, he has hit .331. Tice plays all three infield positions but is primarily a second baseman… Binghamton activated, and then released, 2B Joey Wong  (AAA/AA: .196)… 6-8, 16/yr. old (yes… 16) P Junior Santos was transferred from the GSL-1 team to Florida’s GCL-Mets. Santos pitched in 11 games (10-starts) and posted a stat line of 1-1, 2.80, 0.91, 45-IP, 36-K, only 6-BB… C Johnny Monell (2018: 194-AB, .263) came off the DL and announced his retirement. Here’s a guy that hit .271 in 3204 at-bats, over 1 minor league seasons, and only got 56 at-bats in the show. Baseball can be so cruel sometimes… wish ya well, Johnny… Kingsport pitcher, Eric Villanueva was traded to the Detroit Tigers. Villanueva pitched in 13 games this season, posting a stat line of 5.80/2.23. Can’t wait to see what we got back for this one… RHP Trent Johnson was transferred from Low/A-Brooklyn to A-Columbia.

Projected Top 10 Pick - MLB Draft 2019   -

        Zach Thompson, LHP, Kentucky

Though he missed a large portion of his sophomore season with an elbow injury, Kentucky southpaw Thompson is likely to be one of the top-ranked pitchers in the 2019 draft class, and should hear his name called in the first round next June. Standing 6-2 and 225 pounds, Thompson runs his fastball into the mid-90s and backs it up with a sharp curveball and average changeup. He jumped onto the scene during his freshman season in 2017 by posting an 8-3 record to go along with a 3.45 ERA and 96 strikeouts in just over 75 innings. He was named a Second Team Freshman All-American by D1 Baseball and Baseball America, and a First Team honoree by Rawlings/Perfect Game. Scouts have been on Thompson since high school, as he was selected in the 11th round of the 2016 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, and they love his competitiveness on the mound as well as his electric stuff. The question surrounding Thompson is whether he can stay healthy because, if he can, he has the potential to be a No. 1 starter in the big leagues for years to come.

MLB Stat of the Day - The Braves are 5-0 in games Jacob deGrom starts this season. He has a 1.09 ERA in those games.

Joel Sherman Jacob DeGrom has 6 games of at least 8Ip/2 ER or fewer. No one else has more than 4. He is 1-3, 2 NDs. All other SPs: 73-9 with 18 NDs. DeGrom has 13 games of at least 7Ip/2 ER or fewer. No one else has more than 10. He is 3-4, 6NDs. All other SPs: 330-51, 115 NDs.

Steve Gelbs - Jacob deGrom has gone 8.0 innings in four of his last five starts. In that span he has a 1.85 ERA with 39 Ks and 5 walks.

He’s 0-3.

I’ve never seen anything like this.

James Wagner - It’s Aug. 4 & Mets 1B prospect Peter Alonso is slashing .280/.396/.541 with 25 HR & 93 RBI between Class AA & AAA. He still hasn’t been called up. (They should probably do so before Sept. 1 though.) Mets have said 1B now is mostly for Wilmer Flores & Dom Smith when he’s up again.

Morning, Mack

Kelenic is 4-10 in his last 2 games, with 5 RBIs. First slump weathered, it appears.

At least Monell made it - so man, like Matt Oberste, don't.

Dominic Smith homered - but was 1 for 5. Has to be between the ears.

Vientos is absolutely scalding in his last 10 games.

Monell was a victim of Terry Collins (as were many other young ballplayers).

He was not much of a catcher defensively, but I saw him play in person a number of times and the man could hit.
