PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 3, 2018) – A furious rally from the St. Lucie Mets came up just short as the Daytona Tortugas survived 3-2 on Friday at First Data Field.
Down 3-1, the Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth on an error and two singles. Daytona closer Ryan Hendrix recovered to get the next two batters but then threw a wild pitch to bring home Jeremy Vasquez to make it 3-2.
The Mets moved the tying run to third and the winning run to second base on the misfire. Hendrix bounced back by getting Dale Burdick to fly out to left field to end the game.
Tortugas starter Scott Moss was credited with his FSL-leading 13th win. Moss held the Mets to one run over eight innings.
The four Mets pitchers in the game – Anthony Kay, Austin McGeorge, Adam Atkins and Stephen Villines – combined to retire the final 15 batters.
But Daytona did enough damage early in the game to provide enough offense. The Tortugas first two batters of the game reached base and scored.
In the second inning Randy Ventura hit a two-out single against Kay to plate Malik Collymore to give the Tortugas a 3-0 advantage.
Kay shook off the rocky start and cruised in his final three innings. He struck out five batters in a row at one point.
Kay allowed three runs on five hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out six.
McGeorge (1.2 innings), Atkins (1.1 innings) and Villines (one inning) all had perfect outings.
Mike Paez went 1 for 4 with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. That is the longest streak for a Met this year.
Dan Rizzie also went 1 for 4 to increase his own hitting streak to eight straight games.

I like those 5 straight Kays by Anthony Kay.
