I can't avoid this in my weekly post this week, but a quick spin here...
This is a team statement probably hammered out on the phone while flying to Syracuse.
It had to be done for so many reasons.
I would have been fine if the money was aved here and dished out to guys like Wheeler and Conforto, but that's just me.
The soap opera ends, JdG can pitch now and Syndergaard can shut up. I wonder how he feels about the flight’s delay in going to Syracuse?
I love baseball simulation games, especially ones where you play the general manager role. Those games are ordered by rationality - intangibles play no role in optimal decision-making. Trades and free-agent signings can be quantitatively assessed, so they can objectively be determined "good" or "bad."
Brodie can't do that. There's no algorithm for assessing credibility - either his own or for the organization. The signing itself isn't rational, not when deGrom had one more year of arbitration and we have no idea how he'll perform in 2019. It was absolutely necessary, however, and I am glad it happened.
That's a fair extension, IMO.
I am glad they got this done, but I wish the media and a specific teammate would have waited to make such a mess out of the negotiations.
All for naught and we have our homegrown "ace" locked up for a bit.
Jake gets paid. Good.
WTG BVW so hopefully Noah can get by this year on his piddling 6 million and shut up and pitch oh and by the way LETS GO METS.
Its a fair deal. What it does is lock in 2020 at an expected rate, finishing out team control. The 2021/22 are at the top of the current market. No discount given (depending on deferrals) in those years. The opt-out and the option year are at fair values. So basically the only money the mets saved here was on potentially the arb 4 year at 23 mm. Degrom potentially gave up about 3-4 million if hes cy young again. However, this is life changing money for Degrom and full of downside protection. All is all everyone did well here. Mets got less years at full freight. Degrom got enough years at full freight plus an opt out.
Kinda hoping they will follow the trend and lock Noah and Conforto up for extensions too.
I think the best part of this as a fan is that he got a no trade too and so I will feel comfortable buying my nephew a degrom jersey as I Know he will be a met for a long time coming. This is part of the reason its important to invest in your home grown talent.
Good job by team and by Jake. Despite the media obsession, they got it done reasonably. Now, play ball!
