Tom Brennan - KIDS IN KAMP - PITCHERS EDITION
On Thursday, I got into the young and restless hitters - those hoping to crack the major league barrier and play in Queens. Not the aging vet type hitters - just the kids.
Today?
YOUNG PITCHERS GETTING IT DONE (OR NOT)
I want to leave out guys like Corey Oswalt, Tim Peterson, Jacob Rhame,Chris Flexen, Tyler Bashlor, Drew Smith, Daniel Zamora, Drew Gagnon, and Paul Sewald, who pitched a lot in the last year or two for the Mets and are still early in their careers and hoping to make it.
I'll get to them next week, along with other new guys from other organizations who've been in the bigs: Walter Lockett, Archie Caminero, Sean Burnett, Hector Santiago, Ryan O'Rourke, Luis Avilan, and Casey Coleman.
Boy, look at those 2 groups of names and you can see that making a major league opening day squad is HARD.
A whopping 34 guys had already pitched in Mets games by Thursday, February 28. About 1/3 of those will be coming north.
Of course, some of those have no realistic chance of making the majors for a while, so that challenge is not quite as daunting for the others as I just made it sound.
Anyway, back to today's subject.
Just covering the New Young and Restless Wannabes today. Guys who have had the briefest of cups of coffee, or not yet made the big leagues at all.
So who of those are "doers" so far (thru Thursday's tilts)?
Ryder Ryan - 2 innings, 2 hits, a run, a walk, no Ks
PJ Conlon - 1 perfect IP (added a scoreless frame Friday)
Steve Villines - 2 innings, 2 hits, a run, a walk, 1 K, (HR)
Eric Hanhold - 2 innings, 3 hits, a run, no walks, 2 Ks (and added a scoreless frame on Friday)
Corey Taylor - 1 inning, 2 hits, no runs, a walk, 1 K
Joshua Torres - 2 scoreless innings, 1 hit, no walks or Ks
Kyle Dowdy - the Rule 5 pick has gone 2 2/3, 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and a K

So, most all of the fighting newbies (the magnificent seven above) are doing well or reasonably well.
But the 2 first round lefties, though, David Peterson and Anthony Kay, have pitched more like Scott Peterson and Danny Kay so far, with a combined 4 innings, 9 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks, and 3 Ks.
Hopefully, much better things to come soon from these southpaws.
It is really early to be looking at these 9 guys and drawing any conclusions yet - so perhaps I will look to do an update in a week or so on them.

Zamora could ha E been in this group. He had what, 6 innings last year? Conlon had more than that.
Zamora, true. Think it was 9 innings, 3 runs. Fifteen Ks for me vaulted him higher.
