The Mets have had a lousy spring, record-wise.
The team's spring ERA exceeded 5.00.
Hitting was middle-of-the-road.
Time to panic?
HECK, NO!
"Tippy top of the ferris wheel" performance is more like it!
When trying to get a feel as to how the spring really went, it is enlightening to consider how the players who made the 25 man roster collectively did. Filter out the rest of the guys who did not make the squad.
After all, those 25 man roster types are the guys who will actually be playing for the Mets when the games count.
Those are the guys we'll see in Queens.
So....how did those guys do?
Well I took a look, and here, collectively, is how they did hitting...and pitching.
HITTING
Final cuts have not been made but let's assume the hitters coming north are Ramos, d'Arnaud, Smith, Alonso, Cano, Rosario, Guillorme, McNeil, Conforto, Nimmo, Broxton, and JD Davis and Rajai Davis. Those 13 combined to hit:
170 for 541 (.315), 28 doubles, 2 triples, 24 homers, and 83 RBIs. Sweet!
That assumes Hecchavaria, Lagares, and Mesoraco don't make it.
Lagares dropped? Well, he hit .180 in 50 at bats with ZERO RBIs. I'd cut him.
PITCHING
Coming north are the 5 starters, Diaz, Familia, Lugo, Gsellman, Justin Wilson, Luis Avilan, and O'Rourke. They combined for 61 earned runs in 131 IP, but that should dramatically improve as the starter innings go up. I still think the team ERA will be around 3.50 to 3.75, plenty good.
Now, of course, we have to keep in mind that many of the guys who KNEW they would be on the 25 man roster could take their time getting zoned in - for them, it is really the last week of hitting and last outing or two that really count.
At the same time, they went up against a lot of guys trying to make the big leagues on other clubs who have a "less-than-25-man-roster" caliber of skills, so our 25 man hitters should clean up, and our 25 man pitchers should have a much easier go of it than if they were facing a mid-season Yankees or Red Sox line up.
Nonetheless, I am very impressed how the 25 man roster guys did collectively. I think it bodes very, very well for the season to come.

Lagares last two springs: 100 at bats, .190, 1 RBI, 2 XBHs, 23 Ks. How awful is that? 1 RBI in 100 at bats.
He better be on a very short leash, contract or not.
I figures against hope that Luis G, O'Rourke and Rahai D would be coming north based on their great springs. Who says performance matters?

Mets eating a contract? Not in their DNA. Better bet is paying down significantly for a wildcard prospect and some cost savings.

As you pointed out, Tom, Lag had as bad a ST last year as he has this year. And all he did in the regular season was hit .329 until he kicked the only unpadded part of the wall.
