Reese Kaplan -- Is BVW Developing Hemorrhoids?

We’ve all heard the phrase"Addition by Subtraction".  It’s used to describe the state of improvement that’s possible when adding new talent isn’t the approach taken, but instead success is achieved by removing the subpar talent to improve the roster composition overall.  Right now that appears to be the only types of transactions BVW is making to improve the state of the ballcllub.  Sitting around and doing nothing can be hazardous not only to one's health but also to a team's position in the standings.

As the Mets spiral quickly from division leaders to mediocrity there has been quite a bit of addition by subtraction already due to injury.  The bullpen alone has seen Jeurys Familia and Luis Avilan felled by injuries.  They were both pitching as if their ailments indeed were hampering their success.  As bad as they were, ANYTHING the Mets get from the parade of replacements is likely going to represent an improvement.

Some indicate a removal of one or both of the spare outfielders – Keon Broxton and Juan Lagares – would also represent addition by subtraction.  The elder speedster Rajai Davis has been hot of late in AAA and wouldn’t cost a fortune to promote.  Is BVW ready to admit he was wrong in acquiring the speedy but whiff-prone Broxton?  Is he ready to eat another of Sandy Alderson’s mistakes in Juan Lagares?  Probably not.

Now you have also had injuries to other players like Justin Wilson who had been pitching well and Sunday you lost Jason Vargas early with hamstring tightness.  I can’t believe I’m going to type these words, but Jason Vargas might be tough shoes to fill.  Over his last four starts he has pitched a total of 18 innings which makes stats easy to compile on a per-game basis.  During that stretch he’s allowed 6 earned runs with 12 hits, fanned 17 and walked eight.  That’s a 3.00 ERA, 6 hits and nearly a strikeout per IP with 4 walks per game – not the stuff of Cy Young Awards, but way better than you have a right to expect from a 5th starter (and far better than we’ve seen from this flawed free agent signing).  Now word is out that Steven Matz has his annual injury, returning to NY to have his forearm examined.

Of course, the opposite has been known to occur as well, when you subtract players who have been performing well in order to give opportunities to inferior ones.  Nearly everyone seems to feel they can live with J.D. Davis’ defense given his offense rather than the sub-Mendoza Todd Frazier.  The .333 hitting Dom Smith was sent upstate to make room for the good glove/no bat Adeiny Hechavarria.

Ummm, why?

Some say the reasoning had to do with Smith getting steady ABs to let him continue to develop as a hitter.  He was only getting sporadic assignments off the bench or on the odd days Pete Alonso was asked to take a seat.  There was the issue of the contract provisions for Hechavarria which would allow him to become a free agent if the club did not add him to the big league roster by Friday, May 3rd.  If you also said he was going to play the OF regularly down there to increase his versatility then perhaps I could buy into it.  As it is, they left themselves with an all right-handed bench that doesn’t improve when Jed Lowrie returns as it pushes Todd Frazier there as well.  The conventional thinking is that he’s preparing to increase his trade value.

Right now the Mets are pretty much trying the old spaghetti trick of throwing relief pitchers against the wall and seeing who sticks.  We’ve seen Drew Gagnon, Chris Flexen, Corey Oswalt, Tim Peterson, Daniel Zamora, Ryan O’Rourke and Tyler Bashlor get the ball.  For some it’s too soon to make the yay/nay call.  Others have failed consistently.

There’s certainly room for additions to the roster.  Frazier gets his opportunities due to the size of his paycheck.  Nimmo gets his due to his solid year in 2018.   Juan Lagares is here primarily because no one is stupid enough to pay $9 million for what he delivers (except, of course, Sandy Alderson).  Broxton is here because they gave up three people to get him.  They saw enough of Travis d’Arnaud and parted ways.  Here’s hoping BVW isn’t going to offer up a premature, “Mission Accomplished” banner and sit on his, ahem, laurels while improvements can indeed be made.

The sign of a good GM is making sure you and your manager are making the right moves.

Just because you got Broxton, that does not mean you can't realize it is a mistake. Milwaukee got Bobby Wahl and he is out for the year - they move on. Mets should, too. They MUST, too.

Frazier? He deserves to be called the Splendid Splinter - from all the splinters he is removing from his butt on the bench. Note to Mets: the regular season is real, and every game counts. Todd is hitting (sorry, wrong word) .146, with an >833 off base %. The offense staggered with him last year - last year was his Reyes 2017 season. This year is Todd's 2018 Reyes season - he is washed up. No other team would start this has-been at 3rd.

I would have kept d'Arnaud for a while. The rush was...what? Nido is worse than he is.

The Mets play Broxton, Frazier, Nido and Lagares together. Hitting .173 now, in 161 at bats. "Here, we don't want to win this game - take it, Milwaukee, here, we don't want it."

The Mets bring up one pitcher after another - many doing badly. Gio is available -- do they get him? Of course not, then right on cue, Vargas and Matz get hurt.

This team is 1) Stupid and 2) Cursed. Because of # 1 and # 2, this season is in major jeopardy.

Really hope May doesn't turn into last June.

Reese,
As I have often said, the Mets find ways to lose. If they pitch, they don't hit and if they hit, they don't pitch. If they pitch and hit, the defense will let them down. Then you have to hire a clueless manager because that's the requirement for the job. How else do you explain some of his lineups?

But lets not sugar coated, these Mets have a lot of dead weight in the club house. Too many marginal players starting for no reason especially when the team is having a hard time starting.

Why is Frazier starting over Davis? the way Nimmo is hitting right now, I would start Lagares more often and at least get the defense. Broxton? why is he even here? Why is Cano hitting 3rd instead of McNeil? Why promote Hechevarria over Guillorme who was hitting better and can play defense with the best of them while also being able to play all over the infield?

Right now I think that both Rosario and Nimmo are in need of a trip upstate NY. Broxton should be dfa and Rajai Davis promoted to take his place. Frazier should also be shown his bench spot once Lowrie is healthy.

Lastly, Dominick has nothing left to prove in the minors. I'm sure if you ask him, he would rather be in the bench than in the minors. The one time he has actually performed at the ML level and he gets rewarded by being sent down to the minors. Ahh the joy of being a Mets player.

Gary, last June was preceded by last May, which was not good either.

Viper, right on on all counts, except I let Nimmo play his way out of it.

He was in the top 10 last year in MLB in OBP, and the Mets NEED men on base - let's hope he snaps out of it.

Dominic, as soon as Alonso was signed, should have been played in the minors in LF and at 3B, where he'd probably be passable by now with experience. I'd like his bat. Instead, the dummies left Alonso and Dom on a collision course.

Tom,
Isn't Dominick a LH thrower? he can't play 3B.

Guys -

The ability of Mickey to make decisions can all be summed up in one moment.

First, he says that due the 18 inning game, Vargas is going to be asked to run his start last night up to his pitch limit.

hen, he pulls him after giving up three runs in FOUR INNINGS.

50 PITCHES.

I can't keep doing this if this continues.

I hate to say it but the team has become boring again. I can't watch when you trot out a lineup like you did yesterday and effectively give up the game before it starts. Why was McNeil sitting yesterday? Probably could have been the difference between the win and the loss (besides Broxtons crappy defense).

Even if the Mets rotations stays healthy the rest of the way and pitches well I still contend it was idiocy to not sign Gio to the very little money he was looking for. It's baffling that they spend that money and DFA it in D'Arnaud or on Hech where we have more depth than we know what to do with.

Its pretty disappointing to see Rosario and Nimmo regress from last year. Those guys plus Conforto and McNeil made for a pretty exciting game in the last two months of 2018. Honestly I think our season rests on them turning it around.

If the Mets continue down this path, this is going to be the last season for Mack's Mets.

Why are so many on the dump Rosario bandwagon? Yes, he's got some defensive struggles, but his offense is fine, probably in the top 10 in SS in all of baseball.

Reese,
Sometimes players need a little kick in the gravitas to get going again. See what happened with Vargas when he thought he was being pulled from the rotation? pitching pretty well lately right.

Even if you don't sent them down to AAA, you sit them for a week and start Rajai Davis (dfa Broxton), and Guillorme. Hechavarria doesn't cut it for me but that's me.
