Blast From The Past - Introducing the 2010 Mets Bullpen

So, how many relievers do the Mets carry in 2010? I always like to work with the number seven, so we’ll go from there.

With the acquisition of Igarashi and Everts, the Mets will field one of the most talented pens in the league.

Remember… if you can’t field a rotation of innings eaters, go out and get yourself a killer pen.

IMO, locked up slots are:

1. Closer – RHP Francisco Rodriquez: 2009: 3-6, 3.71 - F-Rod will close and close he wiil. The addition of Igarashi will eliminate the need for Rodriquez to pitch the eight inning sometimes.

2. Eight Inning Specialist – RHP Ryoda Igarashi – the additional of the 30-year flame thrower is an easy fit into the slot left open when J.J. Putz and Billy Wagner left. Everybody is very high on him and I pray the Mets have finally signed a great player from that part of the world.

3. LOOGY - LHP Pedro Feliciano: 6-4, 3.03 - the Everts and Igarashi signings took no pressure off of Felciaino. Both are righties and Pedro will slot into the 7th inning LOOGY role he does so well.

4. ROOGY - RHP Bobby Parnell: 4-8, 5.30 - Parnell will go back to what he has proven he can do at the major leagye level: give good right handed inning. His 2009 ERA is littered with poor starts.

5. RHP Brian Stokes: 2-4, 3.97 – Stokes will go sort of long, more than short, and whatever else the team wants him to do

6. RHP Clint Everts: There’s going to be some people questioning my putting him firmly in the Queens pen from the get-go, but I have followed this kid from the draft and I’m telling you he has turned around a failing SP career and had a stellar RP year in 2009.

7. Long Man – Nelson Figueroa – 3-8, 4.09 - the only Mets pitcher to throw a complete game in 2009, no one ate innings more effectively than Nellie. He deserves first digs at this slot.

Other Candidates or Left Outs

LHP Jack Egbert: - 0-0, 27.00 recent signee… no room

RHP Sean Green: - 1-4, 4.52 in 79 Mets appearances in 2009… where do you slot him?

RHP Eddie Kunz: At this point in his career, Kunz would be a long shot, but he is currently on the 25-man squad, so he must be added to the list.

LHP Arturo Lopez: 0-0, 19.29 – another recent signee… still no room

LHP Pat Misch: - Again, no room

RHP Tobi Stoner: - Stoner really got screwed from the Igarashi signing

LHP Adam Bostick – God, he’s never gonna get a shot, is he?

Nice flash back.

Most pen arms' careers flash by like a comet. Igarashi stunk as a Met except for going 5-2.

Parnell was great briefly until his arm blew up.
