John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 9/1/2020

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Luis Rojas, David West, and Derek Wallace. Marlins 5 Mets 3 and Todd Frazier is back.

Mets Links:

Marlins 5 Mets 3 Jacob deGrom (L, 2-1) 6 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs, 1 ER, 2 walks, 9 Ks, 103 pitches – 72 strikes; 1 K; Hunter Strickland, 1 inning, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 2 Ks; Brad Brach 1 inning, 1 runs, 1 ER, 1 hit (HR), 0 walks; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 2 Ks; Jeff McNeil 2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1K; Robinson Cano 2 for 4 (HR #6), run scored, 1 RBI; Pete Alonso 0 for 4; Dominic Smith 1 for 3, 1 RBI. (Box Score).

Mets Daddy: “Jeff McNeil broke out of a slump in a big way with a second inning RBI double. Later in that second, Dominic Smith hit a sacrifice fly to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. After that, the Mets again forgot how to hit in RISP going 2-for-10 in the game. However, you would’ve thought that wouldn’t matter. After all, deGrom was on the mound.”

NY Post: “Garrett Cooper’s homer in the sixth sliced the Mets’ lead to 2-1 before the roof caved on deGrom, with an assist from Alonso’s error. Alonso misplayed Matt Joyce’s grounder, opening the gate for the Marlins to score three unearned runs. Lewin Diaz stroked an RBI double to tie the game before Miguel Rojas produced a run-scoring single. Jorge Alfaro’s double brought in the inning’s final run. ‘I left the ball over the middle of the plate and didn’t execute pitches when I needed to,’ deGrom said.”

As we had yesterday on Mack’s Mets: Mets reacquire Todd Frazier, get C Robinson Chirinos, RHP Miguel Castro.

Todd Frazier's 2020 #'s: 108 AB; 26 Hits; 2 HR; .241 BA; 7 RBIs.

Robinson Chirinos' 2020 #'s: 42 AB; 5 Hits; 0 HR; .119 BA; 2 RBIs.

Miguel Castro's 2020 #'s: 1-0; 4.02 ERA; 16 games; 1 Save; 15.2 IP; 24 Ks.; 1.404 WHIP.

Sports Illustrated: "I'm a big fan of Miguel Castro as a person, as well," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. "Love the guy. He's been improving ever since I've seen him pitch and was putting together a nice year this year. It was tough to say goodbye to him during the game."

About Miguel Castro Metstradamus said: “He has a 5.20 ERA in the eighth inning, and a 5.23 ERA in the ninth. Opposing batters have an .842 OPS in save situations with a .513 slugging%. In non save situations: .709 and .376. But he’s controllable. We have him for two more years. Great. This is basically Diaz for Kelenic again, just on a smaller scale and without the albatross contract of an aging second baseman. It’s the baseball version of ‘Tremors 2: Aftershocks.’”

Forbes.com: New York Mets Trade Deadline: The Last One Under The Wilpons Is Just Like The First One. In 2002 (after the Doubleday buy out) “The Mets entered the day 4 1/2 games out of the wild card spot — further removed from a playoff berth than any team that made going for it trades in the final week of the month — but still traded pitcher Bobby M. Jones and a pair of minor leaguers (Jason Bay among them) to the Padres in exchange for reliever Steve Reed and starter Jason Middlebrook and sent pitcher Mark Corey, outfielder Jay Payton and minor leaguer Rob Stratton to the Rockies in exchange for outfielder Mark Little and starter John Thomson.”

SNY.TV: Mets got calls on Edwin Diaz, but didn’t intend to move him. The team had been exploring catching and pitching help.

I guess if Pete Alonso is going to turn into Kirk Nieuwhenhuis right before our eyes in terms of vacant offense, he might as well add in a critical error too.

This is a crazy year. Having to play as many games this past week after the layoff hurt the Mets big time.

I read that Kevin Smith is a fifth starter so he was expendable. But for the rest of this year and next year we have almost no starters in the System because Brodie gave them all away. Dunn and Kay are in the majors. Richardson is high up on BA prospect list. He gave away Humphreys who did great in AFL last season. I think the best move was Cashman’s move. Do nothing and do not move anyone in your minor league system.

Raw - you are so correct. The Mets bullpen needed extra arms because - (as Metstradamus pointed out) we don't have a 2nd starter, let alone a 5th starter. That led to bullpen pitchers being used often (like Hughes 3 days in a row on Sunday) and moving Lugo and Gsellmen into the pen. As you said - no starters in the system as Brodie gave them all away. Extremely poor roster management.

On another note, guess we have to update our prospect lists again. It should last at least until the WS is over.
