Mets Games Played On This Date: April 12

The Mets have played 36 times in their history on April 12th for a record of 19 and 17.  This includes the Major League debut of Tim Leary on a cold Sunday Afternoon.

20 Years ago today: Year: 2001; Game #9; Thursday,   Apr 12, NYM 1 ATL  0; boxscore;  10  innings; WP: Benitez; LP:  Ligtenberg; Time: 02:52; NIGHT; Attendance: 27,694.

Rey Ordóñez singled in Todd Zeile to score the  game’s only run in a 10 inning 1-0 win over the Braves.  Glendon Rusch pitched 7 shutout innings for the Mets followed by a scoreless inning from John Franco and two scoreless from Armando Benitez.

30 Years ago today: Year: 1991; Game #5; Friday,   Apr 12, NYM 3 MON 4; boxscore;  11 innings; WP: Burke; LP: Franco; Save: Frey; Time: 03:57; NIGHT; Attendance: 22,163.

The Mets scored 2 in the 8th on a walk to Howard Johnson, a triple by Daryl Boston, and a single by Mark Carreon to even the game at 3.  The game stayed tied until the 11th when John Franco gave up a double to Gil Reyes which scored Nelson Santovenia with the winning run.

40 Years ago today: Year: 1981; Game #3; Sunday,   Apr 12, NYM 2 @ CHC 1; boxscore; WP: Allen; LP: Eastwick; Time: 03:00; DAY, Attendance: 7,475.

After a just one minor league season, and a strong Spring Training Mets Manager Joe Torre convinced Mets GM Frank Cashen to let Tim Leary start the season with the big club.

UPI.com: “Tim Leary, the New York Mets' rookie right-hander who has been tabbed the 'next Tom Seaver,' Tuesday was placed on the 21-day disabled list by the National League club.

Leary, 22, sustained a muscle strain of his right elbow in his major-league debut April 12 against the Cubs in Chicago and left the game after pitching two scoreless innings.”

ESPN.com: “The headlines hyped Leary as “Tim Terrific” since New York was starved for an ace after the trade of Tom Seaver to the Reds in 1977.  Unfortunately, the Mets made the mistake of giving Leary his major league debut on an unpleasant, chilly April 12, 1981, at Wrigley Field. Starting on the road toned down the hype, but didn’t provide the most pleasant pitching conditions. Leary struck out the first two hitters he faced but left after two innings with an injury to a muscle in his forearm, one that may have come from too much weightlifting.”

After Tim left, Pete Falcone threw 5 scoreless innings, Jeff Reardon walked 2 and Neil Allen allowed one of those to score to knot the game at 1-1.  Mike Cubbage knocked in the game winning run in the top of the 9th on  a sacrifice fly that scored Hubie Brooks.

National Pastime.com: In a humiliating 9–8 extra-inning loss against the Phillies, the Mets blow a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, thanks, in part, to Keith Hernandez's error allowing the leadoff batter to reach base, opening the floodgates to Philadelphia's comeback. Six years, the New York first baseman's Veterans Stadium miscue (albeit placed in the wrong season and different venue) becomes the background of a conspiracy theory detailed in an hour-long Seinfeld episode, The Boyfriend.
