Tim Healey Newsday: Righthanded reliever Sam McWilliams was designated for assignment. In a month with Triple-A Syracuse, though, Sam McWilliams struggled. He had a 10.80 ERA in seven games, walking eight (and striking out 10) in 8 1/3 innings.

1964:     The exhibition game with their Williamsport farm club is rained out, much to the delight of the Mets. Yesterday, the team finished a ten-hour marathon at 11:25 p.m., dropping a twin bill to the Giants, 5-3 and 8-6, which included a 23-inning nightcap.

2012:     Johan Santana, who did not pitch last year because of shoulder surgery performed at the end of the 2010 season, no-hits the Cardinals at Citi Field, 8-0, with the help of third base ump's blown call on a fair ball and an outstanding defensive play by outfielder Mike Baxter. The 33 year-old two-time Cy Young Award winner's 134-pitch effort ends the Mets' streak of over fifty seasons, spanning 8,020 games, without a no-hitter.

Baseball Reference:

1968 - Joe Hoerner of the St. Louis Cardinals ties the National League record for most consecutive strikeouts by a relief pitcher. Horner strikes out the final six batters he faces and earns the win in a 6 - 5 victory over the New York Mets.

2017 - The first-place Brewers defeat the struggling Mets, 2 - 1, behind a strong pitching performance by Chase Anderson who tosses seven scoreless innings. There is an unusual play in the 4th inning: with the bases loaded and one out, Milwaukee's Eric Sogard lifts a pop-up near the third base line. The Mets' batboy tries to get out of the way, taking his chair with him, but in doing so impedes 3B Wilmer Flores' path to the ball. Third base umpire Fieldin Culbreth first calls the batter out, but the umpires reverse themselves after conferring, as there is no provision in the rules for "batboy interference". Manager Terry Collins comes out to argue and is ejected, but he shouldn't have bothered, as Sogard then grounds into an inning-ending double play.
It was nine years ago today that Johan Santana pitched a no hitter.  You can watch the entire gamehere.

Ahh, Pillar, Mason Williams, and McKinney...are you missing Maybin and Lee as much as I am?

Pillar is amazing - words do not do justice.

Jake has progressed in his career: from really good, to great, to greater, to greatest.

Pete returns, Mets exhale. Now it is time to crush June. Heck, Lindor is almost back to .200.

What I missed most on Monday? Minor League ball. No, not really.

Thought it made no sense having no minor league games yesterday. It would have made more sense to play tomorrow on Memorial Day when people were off from work and have off today.

Pillar is a great story, but I hope he doesn’t reinjure those sensitive nasal bones. I understand why he rushed back, but sometimes people need to be protected from themselves.

Mallex Smith cut? Wow! He hasn’t even played a game yet.

We give Rojas alot of crap over every single move we aren’t happy with, but how about a little love with how he has been guiding the ship so far this year?

I saw something saying Mallex Smith was rehabbing, but it was a brief snippet. Who knows?

Suffice it to say that if he was not able to play when 4 outfielders went down, something was wrong in Mallex Ville.

With Mallex Smith it is possible that he received a bonus if he was still on the roster on June 1. Other players were released and re-signed yesterday for that reason. Same could happen with Mallex.

He broke his foot right before season started.

I look at grim, dour Joe Girardi with the Phils and I'm sure glad he's not the Mets manager. He's old school w/ a touch of Dallas Green -- I don't think he's the answer to the modern baseball club.

Rojas fits the new model and, yes, he's done a good job so far. He's like an office manager, a middle manager, and he's steady, calm, clear -- and he knows he's not the boss.

When it comes to fans, I think managers are as good as their bullpens. That's the easiest, fastest complaint; fans love to pick apart "bullpen usage." But in the end, if the pen is great, you look brilliant. If the pen fails, you pushed the wrong button.

I like Rojas.

Wasn't surprised by any of the roster moves of recent except one. I liked Sean-Reid Foley and hoped he stick. Has skills.

Foley - having options left is a two-edged sword, with which you can get unfairly cut.

I think when you are constructing the modern bullpen, ideally you have 2-3 guys in the minors who can be called up to help out here and there. Having guys with options is at a premium.

There are so many guys who don't -- who can't be send down -- that it's really important to have those flex guys who you can move around.

Reid-Foley has been impressive. For me, more for his mound demeanor than his "stuff," per say. He just seems to have the right "get after it" mentality of a Tommy Hunter type. Attack, attack, attack. I like him and he'll be back.
