Over The Weekend

I very much liked the performances of Mets pitchers Corey Oswalt and Seth Lugo, and Drew Smith this weekend. This was excellent a thing (and predictable to me) to see happening because all three pitchers have MLB experience and add greatly to the pitching staff depth and mix. All could be exceedingly clutch going forward. I also predict that they will be.

Seth Lugo from the bullpen has been so many times awesome before. He handled going to the bullpen like a consummate pro, and once there took it upon himself to excel and did. But I never gave up on Corey Oswalt or Drew Smith, and Sunday after a kind of a wobbly start by Stroman (now 6-6), they proved why I didn't. You have to understand, that just reaching the MLB is quite a magnificent accomplishment unto itself. But learning how to excel once there and against this level of hitting has got to be even a more major feat. They are knocking hard now.

I also think that Tyler McGill was a really great addition to this NY Mets rotation. His pitches show both speed and movement and his potential reminds me a little of Taijuan Walker in that both are top-end rotation guys going foward.

Hypothetical:

If the Mets needed to add in maybe one more starter to their rotation, say due to an injury, one that really impresses me a lot is Padres' lefty starter MacKenzie Gore.

Scouts out at 95-97 mph fastball, low 80's slider, excellent mph variance. Still waiting for his callup to San Diego after right hander Chris Paddock's recent callup. Gore at the moment is out with a finger blister. It's temp. But the Padres' five man currently is pretty full with big named starters from Darvish to Snell, so it might not be so easy for Gore to crack into their rotation anytime soon.

Catcher, first base, bullpen, and outfield could all be better there in SD. They are currently like 4.5 games (in fourth place) back of the lead in their division, but the competition there is rated fierce.

This LSP MacKenzie Gore is a top-rated prospect, but the Mets do have some good young players like Carlos Cortez, OF Khalil Lee, C David Rodriguez, and SP's Franklyn Kilome, Thomas Szapucki, and Yennsy Diaz. Perhaps through a suitable offer a deal could be made to SD for MacKenzie Gore.

Worth a look because Gore is a long term top end decent starter in the making for certain.
