Mack's Mock Pick - #50 - 1B - Wes Clark

 Wes Clark

Mack’s spin -

We talked about power with the last Luca Tresh pick.

Now steps up the nation leader in home runs (tied with FSU C Mat Nelson).

Yes, he tailed off, but the 50 walks in 249 plate appearances proves his value two fold.

Think 2020 version of Pete Alonso/

The Midseason Player of the Year is the country’s leading home run hitter in South Carolina’s Wes Clarke. His batting average is only .309, but Clarke has been doing major damage with home runs and walks as his on-base percentage is a robust .460, meaning he’s basically getting on base once every two plate appearances. His OPS is 1.269 with the nation-leading 15 home runs to his name, as Clarke has parlayed his hot start in 2020 into becoming one of the most feared sluggers in the country.

Uh oh. Wes Clarke is getting hot again. Hit a huge HR yesterday, and just hit another one against Florida.

Wes Clarke, 1B, South Carolina

Clarke was one of the best power hitters in the country last season, and he carried that momentum right on through into 2021. If you date back to Feb. 29 of last season against Clemson and go until Feb. 28 of this season against Clemson, Clarke had a stretch when he clubbed 12 home runs in 13 games. On the season, Clarke is hitting .338/.494/.877 with 11 home runs and 23 RBIs. From a draft perspective, his raw power and production so far this season have given him some helium, despite his defensive limitations.

University of South Carolina junior infielder/catcher Wes Clarke has earned a pair of national honors after his performance in games against Winthrop and Clemson last week. The Forest, Va., native has been named the National Player of the Week by both the Golden Spikes Award and Perfect Game.

Clarke belted five home runs in three games last week, driving in eight while having a 1.833 slugging percentage and a .688 on-base percentage. The junior went 3-for-3 with three home runs, four runs scored, three RBI and two walks in the 12-4 win over Winthrop on Tuesday night. Clarke drove in a run and walked in a 3-2 win over in-state rival Clemson on Saturday. He then got back on the home run train on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs scored, four RBI and a walk in the 8-7 walk-off win against the Tigers.

This is the second straight week Clarke earned the honor from Perfect Game. The Golden Spikes Award, run by USA Baseball, has a fan vote on Monday afternoons to pick the Player of the Week. Clarke earned 57 percent of the votes in the poll.

There are roughly 12,495 Division 1 college baseball players.

South Carolina 1B Wes Clarke has 3 more homers than 12,494 of them after 4 games.

Wes Clarke is intriguing - if they think he could improve and replace an increasingly expensive Alonso in say, 2024. I just wonder if he'd hit over .200 in today's big leagues.
