NY Post: Wild inning saves Mets in much-needed win over Braves. “Dominic Smith singled leading off the [7th] inning for the Mets’ fifth hit and Kevin Pillar walked to give the Mets their first rally. McCann jumped on a 1-2 cutter and just cleared the fence in left-center for his seventh homer of the season.”

Mets.com: Mets ride late power surge to win vs. Braves. “Like Morton, Mets starter Tylor Megill ended his night by giving up a three-run home run, this one to Ozzie Albies in the fifth inning. Still, with eight strikeouts over his five frames, Megill provided a compelling performance as he works to bolster his spot in the rotation.”

Stat of the Day: “Two starts into his MLB career, Tylor Megill has seen only one team: the Atlanta Braves. With his start on Tuesday, Megill became the sixth pitcher in Mets history to start against the same opponent in his first two MLB games. The last Met to do that was Brian Bannister, who debuted with a pair of starts against the Nationals back in April 2006.”












SNY.TV: What's next. The Mets and Braves face off again on Wednesday night at 7:20 p.m. It will be a battle of lefties as David Peterson faces Max Fried. 

NY Post: Jacob deGrom will skip MLB All-Star Game under these Mets conditions. “’If you get selected it’s obviously a really cool thing,’ deGrom told The Post…’but if I pitched that Sunday [before the game] there is definitely no way I would do the All-Star Game — it’s my light bullpen day on that day and to come out and get loose it’s definitely not worth it.’”

New York Mets catcher Tomas Nido and pitcher Jeurys Familia begin rehab assignments in Syracuse on Tuesday.

Mets designate RHP Jerad Eickhoff for assignment, call up LHP Thomas Szapucki. “Eickhoff went 0-1 over two starts with a 4.50 ERA. Over eight games (seven starts) with Triple-A Syracuse, Thomas Szapucki has gone 0-3 with a 4.41 ERA in 2021. He's let up 36 hits and 17 earned runs over 34.2 IP with 38 strikeouts and 22 walks.”

Sandy Koufax becomes the first Dodger southpaw to throw a no-hitter since Nap Rucker accomplished the feat in 1908 when he keeps the expansion Mets hitless in the team's 5-0 victory in Los Angeles. The 26 year-old left-hander, en route to fanning 13, strikes out the first three batters he faces - Richie Ashburn, Rod Kanehl, and Felix Mantilla, on nine pitches to start the game with an immaculate inning.
2000
Trailing 8-2 with two outs in the eighth inning, Mike Piazza's tiebreaking three-run homer completes a ten-run miracle comeback as the Mets stun the Braves, 11-8. Nine of the runs were driven in with two outs, and the ten runs equal the most ever scored in an inning by the Mets.




Baseball Reference:

1962: With the aid of 13 strikeouts and a Frank Howard home run, Sandy Koufax no-hits Bob Miller and the Mets, 5 - 0 in Los Angeles. Sandy starts off the game by fanning the side on nine pitches in the 1st inning, the first National League pitcher to strike out the side on nine pitches since Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance, in 1924. It will be the first of four career no-hitters thrown by Koufax.

1973: The Cubs, leading by seven games, lose to the Mets and Jon Matlack, 2 - 1.

1979: Despite a Home Run by Ex-Met Dave Kingman and Ex-Met Mike Vail's grand slam, the Mets score six runs in the top of the 11th to break a 3 - 3 tie with the Cubs. Chicago storms back with five runs in the bottom of the frame including the grand slam by Mike Vail, but New York hangs on to win the game, 9 - 8. (Box Score).

1993: The Mets defeat the Marlins, 7 - 1, to win consecutive contests for the first time in 65 games.

1997: Bobby Higginson belts three home runs and drives in seven runs and Justin Thompson allows four hits in eight innings as Detroit kicks the Mets, 14 - 0. It is the most lopsided shutout in Mets history. Detroit hits more homers (6) than the Mets have hits (5), and it is the most home runs given up by Mets pitchers since April 29, 1978.

Congrats to Luke Ritter on his 9th. He’s good. Except for stinking Brooklyn. A terrific 8 HR, 25 RBI on the road, but just 1 HR, 2 RBI at home. WTH? That park is hitter death.

Megill got squeezed or he would have had two additional Ks. Ron Darling talked about how when he was a veteran and a rookie pitcher was getting squeezed by the ump, he would try to protect the young pitcher as much as possible by riding the ump from the bench.

It's become routine for me to swing by in the morning for these recaps. I usually just go through the clips, walking through the game and postgame (whether I saw it or not).

I agree with Jimmy. Altho there is a lot more there than I have time to go through, I try to scan it and perhaps pick up on one specific thing. Great job with the daily news.

I also agree that the comments make the site a lot better as well. I really like to see other people's opinions and arguments (in the literary sense).

so I got a random text late last evening from a number I do not have a name with: "Mets closing in on a deal for Josh Donaldson, and a starting pitcher, McNeil part of rerun (sic) package."

Anybody have any idea where that came from and if there is anything to it? I see nothing in this mornings press.

I have not heard that one either, but it almost makes sense to me. The Sandy Plan is to get home run hitters, and Donaldson fits the bill. They could add Jose Berrios or another pitcher, but it would take more than McNeil.

I could see Donaldson and Berrios for McNeil and a mid-level prospect. Donaldson has at least two years and $40m+ left on his contract and Berrios is going to get arbitration expensive next year before FA after 2022. That is a lot of money to bring in - the Twins couldn't expect much if the Mets were to take all the salary. I'm not sure the Twins are in trouble deep enough to dump Berrios though.
