Mack's Mock Pick - #47 - RHP - Jaden Hill

Jaden Hill

Mack's spin -

Hill was easily going to be a top 10 pick until he went down for TJS.

As you can see from his final stat line, his arm first blew up when he was tossing marshmellows to opponent batters.

He is scheduled to return to active duty near the end of next season, so there is question whether he will go back to school for his senior year.

He also needs to spend some getting some movement in the 98 fastball.

Still, my guess that someone will take a chance with him in the sup-1 or second round.

2021 MLB Draft Profile: RHP Jaden Hill, LSU

There is some significant injury risk with Hill — he missed most of his freshman season due to injury — but his ceiling is extremely high. He won’t make his professional debut until, at best, late-2022, and he won’t pitch a full season until he’s 23 years old. That could deter some teams from taking him, but the Dodgers wouldn’t be one of them. If they selected him, they might even be able to save a little money on his signing bonus. He has the look of a No. 2 starter or nasty late-inning reliever.

Pick: RHP Jaden Hill, LSU ($2,424,600 slot value)

This is basically a shot in the dark. Hill had Tommy John surgery a few weeks ago and was considered a potential top-10 pick when healthy, and the Dodgers have not been afraid to select a talented pitcher who falls into their lap because of elbow woes (they did it with Walker Buehler in 2015). When healthy, Hill has upper-90s velocity and a knockout changeup. They might even be able to sign him to a below-slot bonus given the Tommy John surgery, giving them flexibility for later picks.

15. Milwaukee Brewers: Jaden Hill, RHP, LSU

Hill is big, strong and profiles very close to Kumar Rocker. There is a possibility he might drop, however, if he can’t perform better. He’s a raw prospect with a very high ceiling. This could be a steal for the Brew Crew. Last week, he was shut down for the season with an arm injury. This might drop him in future drafts, as his ground was already shaky.

Torn UCL for Jaden Hill. Really sucks to see this. Hope he makes a swift recovery

5. Baltimore Orioles: Jaden Hill, RHP, LSU

Hill is big, strong and profiles very close to Kumar Rocker. There is a possibility he might drop, however, if he can’t perform better. At 2-1 with an ERA over 6.00, Hill needs to find control and prove the doubters wrong that he’s more than a raw prospect with a high ceiling. The Orioles need to add some arms to their system, if it’s not Hill it’ll be someone else at five.

29. RHP Jaden Hill | School: LSU | B / T: R / R | Ht: 6’4 | Wt: 234lbs | Age: 21.6

Jaden Hill is a strong Right Hander with an explosive arm and a 4 pitch mix, that has as much upside as any Pitcher in the class. Including the 2 Vanderbilt stars slated to go inside the Top 3 picks. The question here is can he put it all together consistently, and find a way to improve his Fastball. Hill may have the best Breaking ball or Changeup in the entire class, his secondaries are that good. A devastating Plus mid-80s Slider that generated a video game-like swing and miss rates. Sharp horizontal break that sprinkles in some tilt at times and shows some hard-slurve tendencies with some development left there, but all signs point to a lethal pitch. The Fastball is Above-average but also where some concerns start sprinkling in. Sitting 95-97 T98 in short stints, but falls off as he gets deeper in starts, although has made strides in this aspect in 2021. Heavy Fastball usage with a low amount of swing and miss generated, and fairly flat is not every enticing and will need to command and miss more bats with the Fastball to eventually grade as a Plus pitch but plays off the breaking ball well. Mixes in a Cutter at times. Hills Changeup, another Plus pitch has some filthy movement and fade away from LHH. This will be a big year for year, clearly to show he can utilize his secondaries more often and try and make his Fastball that much more effective and consistent.

Braxton (Michigan):

What accounts for Jaden Hill's 5.18 ERA this season and will teams near the top of the first round look past the lack of production vs SEC opponents so long as he stays healthy and keeps flashing premium stuff?

Carlos Collazo: Well, most of that damage came against Oral Roberts, when Hill didn’t get out of the first inning and allowed five hits and eight earned runs after recording just one out. That is going to ding the ERA for a while. But Mississippi State did some damage against him in his last outing, though the six runs he allowed that time were spread out over 7.1 innings. I was curious about the feedback that we would get for dropping Hill in this update given his struggles in a few games, but there seems to be a hesitancy from many teams because of how promising Hill is when he’s on, and the stuff he has shown. So far this year his slider has not been up to the same grade he’s shown with it in the past, and his fastball has looked fairly hittable at times. I really love Hill’s fastball command and his changeup overall (the command of the pitch, the arm speed, the movement and bat missing potential), but scouts are going to have to bear down on just how well his FB plays in a starting role and so far it’s a real question.

Bases-clearing double.

Ouch

Jaden Hill fans, good news is, today's outing could help drop his stock towards the back of the top 10 #Mets

Bad news, you're drafting a fastball that currently plays below it's velocity.

Carlos Collazo @CarlosACollazo

Welp. Not the start you are looking for. Jaden Hill gets just one out after allowing five runs and leaving the bases loaded in the first. FB wasn't generating whiffs and left over the plate; couldn't get a feel to land the slider.

2-22-21 -  First Round Arms -

Jaden Hill, RHP, Louisiana State (No. 6)

Line: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (62 pitches)

Hill’s first collegiate start was a good one, as the righthander took the ball for four shutout innings with five strikeouts and no free passes against Air Force.

With a large and muscular, filled-out frame and a clean arm action and fluid stroke, Hill certainly looks the part of a pro starter—and he pitched like it on Saturday. Hill opened up with a fastball that touched 97-98 mph in the first inning, before settling into the 94-95 mph range throughout the next three innings. He was able to reach back for 96 mph in the later innings when he needed it, and the pitch featured solid carry through the zone.

2-20-21 - Chris Clegg @RotoClegg

Jaden Hill pitched 4 scoreless innings in his season debut, striking out 5 and walking none. Had his fastball working up to 98 mph. His slider and change looked excellent today as well. This upcoming draft class of college arms is STACKED.

3. Jaden Hill, LSU, P

Hill has more than a few similarities to Rocker. He’s also big (6-4, 233 pounds), also hits high numbers on the radar gun and will likely be a high MLB Draft pick. Like Rocker, Hill also played some football, but unlike Rocker, he more than dabbled in the game. As a pro-style quarterback in the class of 2018, Hill had offers from schools including Missouri and Illinois, according to 247sports. When he chose LSU, Ed Orgeron apparently tried to sell him on playing both sports. Hill missed much of the 2019 season with an arm injury, but if he’s healthy, he’ll be outstanding in 2021.

9. Jaden Hill, RHP, LSU

This is certain to look like a misrank by draft day. The question is whether Hill moves up or down boards by then, with the answer hinging on his availability. He was limited by injury and the pandemic to 21 innings over his freshman and sophomore seasons; the latter wasn't his fault, but it left him unable to assuage concerns about the former. Hill has the stuff and physicality (he's listed at 6-foot-4, 233 pounds) to front a rotation. If he's able to avoid the shelf this spring, he could move into the top five by draft time.
