St. Lucie Mets sweep Blue Jays in doubleheader, 5-0 and 3-2


Oscar Rojas pitches complete game shutout in game 1

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (June 25, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets swept the Dunedin Blue Jays in a doubleheader at Clover Park on Friday. The Mets won the first game 5-0 and rallied for a 3-2 win in game 2.

In game 1, Oscar Rojas dazzled on the mound by throwing a complete game shutout in the 5-0 victory. Rojas scattered four singles, walked just one, brushed off three hit batters and struck out nine. He threw 100 pitches.

Rojas (2-0) retired the first nine batters he faced. He ran into trouble in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but was able to navigate his way through the Blue Jays by inducing a couple of double plays.

Rojas struck out Jhon Solarte looking to end the seventh inning and the game.

The Mets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jaylen Palmer punched a RBI triple to right field and scored on a sac fly from Warren Saunders.

Branden Fryman led off the fourth inning with a home run to make it 3-0. Later in the fourth Alex Ramirez belted a two-out, two-run double to open up a 5-0 lead.

Palmer went 2 for 2 with the triple, a single and walk. Jimmy Titus also went 2 for 2.

Blue Jays starter Sem Robberse (2-2) took the loss. He gave up all five runs and pitched 4.1 innings.

In game 2, the Mets drew four walks from Dunedin reliever Wilgenis Alvardo (0-2) in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Jose Peroza walked with the bases loaded to force home Joe Suozzi for the go-ahead run.

Mets reliever Luis Montas (3-0) pitched the final three innings without allowing a run to get the win. He induced a game-ending double play ball of the bat of Miguel Hiraldo in the seventh.

The Mets (25-21) and Blue Jays (19-26) will play a single nine-inning game on Saturday. First pitch at Clover Park is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. Fans who come to the game will receive a Jacob deGrom Cy Young award bobblehead while supplies last.
