NY Post: Trade deadline, Jacob deGrom among pressing issues facing Mets. “Fortunately for the Mets, at least a dozen teams figure to be sellers heading to the July 30 trade deadline. Many of them will be looking to shed contracts, which would lessen the cost in prospects for the Mets.”  Jose Berrios and Hyun Jin Ryu are mentioned as possible candidates.

Joel Sherman NY Post: Michael Conforto has chance at biggest payday among Mets’ free agents. “Think of George Springer’s six-year, $150 million deal last offseason with Toronto as a benchmark. Springer had slightly better stats from 2017-20 than Conforto, plus he had the ability to play center field and is historically an elite postseason performer.”

NY Post: Brandon Nimmo’s timeline for Mets return coming into focus. “As the outfielder continues a rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse, a club source indicated Thursday that Nimmo is expected back during the Mets’ next road trip. The Mets will begin a seven-game road swing Monday.”

1976

After striking out leading off the game, his 21st consecutive hitless at-bat dating back to June 6, Mike Phillips hits for the cycle in the the Mets’ 7–4 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The New York third baseman doubles in the third, triples in the fifth, homers in the seventh, completing the feat with a single in the eighth inning.

1985

After a line drive foul ball drills a Yankee batboy off the bat of Bronx Bomber catcher Butch Wynegar, the team mandates batboys near the on-deck circle will be required to wear batting helmets. All major league teams will soon adopt the new rule of having batboys wearing a protective helmet while working.

 

1989

The Mets, with fly ball pitcher Sid Fernandez on the mound, play a nine-inning game without recording an infield assist, beating the Phillies at Shea Stadium 5-1. The Amazins set a National League record and tie the major league mark, joining the 1945 Indians as the only teams ever to accomplish the unusual fielding feat.

2001

In the first professional baseball game in Brooklyn after a 44-year absence, the short-season Class A minor league Cyclones win their home opener at Keyspan Park, defeating the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Scrappers 3-2 in 10 innings. The name of the New York-Penn Mets farm team refers to the famous roller coaster located at the nearby amusement park on Coney Island.

Baseball Reference:

1969 - The Mets (14) and Phillies (13) set a National League record for ineptitude by striking out 27 times in the first nine innings of a 10-inning game. The Phils win 6 - 5 when rookie Dave Watkins triples and scores in the 10th. Watkins, who replaces Cookie Rojas when he was thumbed in the 5th, hits his first major league homer as well. Lowell Palmer strikes out nine in 4 1/3 innings for Philadelphia, while Nolan Ryan K's 10 in 6 1/3 innings.

1971: Cleon Jones ties a National League record by drawing six walks, helping the Mets to a doubleheader sweep of the Expos, 4 - 1 and 4 - 2. Jerry Grote has three doubles in the opener, and Bud Harrelson knocks in three runs in the nightcap. Nolan Ryan (7-4) and Danny Frisella (4-1) are winners.

1977: At Old-Timers Day in Chicago, the Cubs score four in the 9th inning to edge the Mets, 5 - 4. Larry Biittner doubles in two runs, and Bill Buckner's wind-blown fly eludes two outfielders for a third double in the frame. With the sacks full, Manny Trillo hits a grounder to third base and beats out the attempted double play for the winner.

1987 - Dwight Gooden (4-1) and the Mets top the Cubs, 8 - 2. For Doc, it is his 10th straight win over Chicago. He'll lose his next decision to them on August 9, then roll off another 12 straight wins.

1992 - Chicago's Greg Maddux and New York's Vince Coleman almost get into a fight, but Maddux takes it out on the Mets by striking out 10 in a 3 - 1 Chicago win. 

2013: The White Sox hold a 4 - 3 lead over the Mets with two outs in the 9th inning, but manage to blow it in the most embarrassing fashion, after Daniel Murphy hits a routine pop-up in front of the mound. 2B Gordon Beckham comes charging in, trips on P Addison Reed's foot and falls to the ground, in the process bowling over 3B Conor Gillaspie, who is positioned under the ball. The ball drops to the ground and rolls away from Reed while David Wright takes advantage of the confusion to score all the way from second base and tie the game. Luckily, the Sox manage to score a run off LaTroy Hawkins in the bottom of the inning to escape with a 5 - 4 win and save a little face.

I was wondering where Sherveyn Newton had gone. Season-ending surgery. Ugh.

Schwarber hitting HR like Ruth.

Vientos hitting homers like Schwarber.

Syracuse on any given night has half a Mets' line up and they lose 15 straight? Maybe it's that 6.35 ERA, exactly double that of Buffalo and worse than any other team in their division by nearly a run per game? And unearned runs brings total runs allowed per 9 up to about 7.2. Ugly.

Tom - it's about pitching and defense. It's why the NY Mets are in 1st and the Syracuse Mets are in last. Circumstances have not been kind to Syracuse. The injuries in NY have resulted in a constantly shifting roster and pitching staff. However, this is a result of trading a number of pitching prospects over the last two years. Had they stayed, Kevin Smith, Simeon Woods-Richardson and even pitchers like Steve Villines and Ryder Ryan would be bolstering this staff.

Boy, I noticed that Brendan Hardy gave up 5 runs on 1 hit, then noticed that 21 of 23 pitches were balls, then noticed he walked 5 in 1/3 inning, then noticed he's walked 60 in 57 career innings. Wow, that's wildness.
