Mike Phillips The Sports Daily.com: “With the season nearly three months old, we’ve learned a lot about teams. Some squads have a knack of finding ways to win while others simply can’t get out of their own way. The New York Mets (40-32) have found themselves in the former, coming from behind on three separate occasions today to top the Philadelphia Phillies (35-39) 4-3, who have put themselves in the latter camp in a way that is killing their season.”

SNY.TV: Resilient Mets once again find a way in walk-off win over Phillies: 'We never feel like we’re out of games' Mets trailed Saturday's game three different times before walking off victorious.

NY Post: Mets rally for walk-off win over Phillies to pick up Jacob deGrom.  “After the Mets were gifted a fielding error and another meltdown by a Phillies reliever in the ninth inning, Michael Conforto hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly for the 4-3 win at Citi Field, sending the season-high crowd of 29,205 into a frenzy.”

Mets.com: Stat of the Day: “The Phillies snapped Jacob deGrom's scoreless streak at 31 innings, tied for third-longest in franchise history. R.A. Dickey holds the Mets record with 32 2/3 straight scoreless innings in 2012, followed by Jerry Koosman with 31 2/3 scoreless in 1973. Four Mets pitchers have thrown 31 shutout innings in a row, including deGrom, who's done it twice. The others: Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden and Bartolo Colon.”

SNY.TV: Jacob deGrom Chasing History: Latest feats, crazy stats, pace, and Cy Young/MVP chances. DeGrom is leading the majors in ERA (0.69), WHIP (0.53), H/9 (3.46), K/9 (14.08), OPP AVG (.115), and SO/W (11.09). DeGrom is on pace to finish the season with 275 strikeouts in 175 innings.

SNY.TV: Mets Injury Tracker: Marcus Stroman to start on normal rest Sunday.

NY Post: Mets’ Carlos Carrasco ‘trending right’ after key rehab step. “The Mets right-hander, who has not thrown a pitch this season because of a torn hamstring, threw a side session from just below the rubber in the bullpen at Citi Field. It marked the latest bit of progress in a season marred by setbacks for Carrasco, who received a platelet-rich plasma injection on June 9, aimed at strengthening his hamstring.”

1962

Monroe High School standout Ed Kranepool, who was an Opening Day guest seated in the owners' box with Mrs. Joan Payson and M. Donald Grant, signs a contract that includes an $85,000 bonus, as an amateur free agent with the Mets. The 17 year-old Bronx teenager will spend his entire 18-year career with the expansion team, establishing franchise records for hits, plate appearances, and games played.

1973

In the opener of a twin bill at Shea Stadium, Buzz Capra pitches four innings of no-hit relief against the Phillies to get the save for starter George Stone as the Mets beat the Phillies, 7-6. A few hours earlier, the 25 year-old right-handed reliever had attended his dad's funeral in Illinois.

1993

Anthony Young sets a major league record when he drops his 24th straight decision, a 5-3 Mets loss to St. Louis at Shea Stadium. The hard-luck New York right-hander, who surpasses the mark established by Boston Dove hurler Cliff Curtis in 1911, will extend the dubious streak to 27 consecutive defeats before winning a game. (Ed. Note - Sadly, AY will die on this date in 2017 at the age of 51, losing his battle to brain cancer. - LP)

2008

In a 15-6 Mets victory over the Yankees at the Stadium, Carlos Delgado, with a double, three-run homer, and a grand slam, establishes a new team record with 9 RBIs in one game. The first baseman, who breaks Dave Kingman's 1976 club mark, also surpasses Sky King on the all-time home run list with the first of his two homers, moving into 34th place with his 443rd career round-tripper.

Baseball Reference:

1992: The Mets edge the Cards with all the runs coming on homers: Dave Gallagher and Tim Jones match dingers, and Howard Johnson's homer in the bottom of the 9th makes John Franco (6-0) a winner. It will be Johnson's last homer of the year.

2012: The Mets erupt for an uncharacteristic offensive outburst, crushing the Cubs, 17 - 1, their most runs in two years. They hit four homers, two by Daniel Murphy, a grand slam by Scott Hairston and a three-run shot by Ike Davis. With David Wright driving in 5 runs, those four players combine for all 17 RBI. Jon Niese is the beneficiary of all that offense, while Jeff Samardzija is charged with the loss.

Peroza on base 3 more times, Cortes 3 more hits, including 2 doubles. Alvarez smokes one, Baty goes oppo

Gotta like those 4.

I was at a wedding, missed the Guillorme walk - all I heard was it was a very close pitch. It missed by a good 3 inches - and Guillorme is respected for his great eye at the plate. Only his first RBI - but it was a biggie. He is just 1 for 7 with RISP - but also 7 walks. A tough out. Just 141 plate appearances over the past 2 seasons - but a terrific .418 OBP over that span. A real keeper.

Glad to see Edwin get a win when he coulda gotten a loss - that's what scoring runs can do.

With Jake scheduled to face the Braves Thursday, who goes against the Bronx team? If Eickhoff and Megill go tomorrow and Tuesday, whoever starts Wednesday won't be rested emough.

Francisco Alvarez is a beast. That is all.

Bill,

I think the Yankees series will be probably be Peterson - Friday (with Walker going Wednesday), Stroman - Saturday; Eickoff or Megill - Sunday; They are making sure deGrom starts every 4th day. They may want to make sure Megill stays on a regular schedule and pitch Sunday or go with experience against the Yankees in the Bronx. Of course, all this could change depending how the games against Washington and Atlanta go.

BTB - I am just glad Alvarez in healthy after the events last week.

John - Huge exhale, agreed.

Watching the Mauricio range makes me think he should be in CF sooner rather than later. Cleveland put Rosario in CF right away, while the Mets were afraid of offending him for years.

Not only is Guillorme a very tough out, but on the field he is a heady player. Good relays and a smart play yesterday to keep the damage in the ninth to a minimum. I feel he is a component of a winning team, and good teams collect those types of players.

Gus - Another thing with Mauricio is that he has 9 errors so far this year. I think the outfield is a better fit...I was happy with Baty at 3B. Maybe they see Vientos as the 3B solution.

In the SMH Dept, Jake, Walker, and Stro May be 19-10 for the Mets….but Flexen, Sewald, Montero, and Zamora are 17-7 for Seattle.

BTB, Alvarez’s bat has a marvelous ferocity to it.
