I would tell Alvarez to hone his catching skills this winter and bring him up as the back up catcher for 2022. He is already a better hitter than Mazeika and Nido.
I think the Mets need to possible trade catchers for minor league prospects this winter. Maybe trade Nido, move Mazeika up to majors and move Senger to AAA. Try to trade Nick Meyer or possible lose him in the rule 5 draft.
I'd love to be part of the healthy discussion here, but honestly don't know what to do at catcher. Obviously McCann is the starter. Nido doesn't have much trade value. I am not much of a Mazieka fan. Senger and Meyer had their moments in Binghamton this year, but neither is probably ready for the show. Unless we can coax Ron Hodges or Charlie O'Brien out of retirement, I guess it is McCann and Nido to start the year. Injuries happen.
I tend to agree with Gus - leave this alone, work on the other areas.
I also agree with Gus .. Alvarez needs more development time. Perhaps push him a bit and start him in Binghamton and if it is going well, get him to Syracuse by the end of the season, but he definitely needs one more year.
(I personally was hoping they could somehow secure Ruiz from the Dodgers last year, but obviously that didn't happen.)
We have to live with McCan't. The problem with Alvarez in Binghamton or Brooklyn is it's freezing early in the season so I'd get him to St. Lucie early and hire a catching instructor to work with him and bring him north when it warms up he'll perform better.
I believe on the list of issues C now has take a back seat but if Alvarez needs so much development maybe he should catch more and DH less… I see way too many Dh-ing in the box scores of our top prospects
Alvarez should catch about 100 games in 2022
Beaty and Vientos should only play in the OF next year to be ready to as OFers in the majors (by now they should have and are what they are as 3b men) Mauricio should only be used as a 3b and 2nd for the same reason as baty and vientos
Maybe look to the non-tenders for a back-up that's a little better than Nido or Mazieka. McCann is going to be the primary. That decision was made last year, for better or worse.
I agree with most of the comments here about letting McCann finish the time we paid him for (maybe in the offseason he can work on framing pitches without allowing passed balls), and bringing up Alvarez the right way. 2021 was a better year at catcher than the prior two years where the Mets were run on at will, so this is a lower priority fix.

Don’t rush the kid. If he’s not even ready to go to AA, but ready for the majors?
I leave catcher alone and worry about the problematic areas. MLB catchers mostly suck anyway.

Alvarez needs work on D skills

Diaz for Gary Sanchez. Sanchez is DH and backup catcher.

Nido has expertise in maximizing off base %. Get a better back up not named Mazeika
