OPEN THREAD - The First Person You Would Make A Met

Okay...

Time to put the POBO hat on...

Who would be the first NEW person you would give a Mets uniform to for the 2022 season?

Fonzie - as a coach or Manager.

Mark Vientos, especially since Tim Tebow and Danny Muno are out of the picture :)

From the outside, though, I would go with Max Scherzer, although he would never come here

Mike Trout

LOL

Mike Trout was the first person that came to my mind when I read the headline, but I'm thinking, Mack is trying to be a little more realistic.

I think Baez and Thor are at the top of my list.

The outstanding CBA is hanging heavy over the whole process. I'm not trading any prospects for one year players at least until that gets resolved.

Thor is an unknown quantity given his injury recovery and dedication to becoming overly muscular.

Baez is known but he is the polar opposite of what the club needs with abysmal OBP and horrific strikeout totals. In addition, he will cost a major fortune.

For me the number on person to make a Met is Aaron Loup. The number one outsider to make a Met might be Starling Marte on a Granderson-like contract...perhaps even shorter since the majority of his game is speed and he's already turning 33. 3 years at $16 million per year might get it done and fill one of the probably two outfield vacancies alongside Brandon Nimmo.

I would agree with Loup, but he is not what I think Mack means by a "new" Met. Therefore Baez, Thor, Stroman, Villar, Conforto all fit in the same category.

For an absolutely new Met from the outside, I would want either Corey Dickerson as a free agent or Ramon Laureano through trade. Both could be had at a reasonable price, would fill the outfield needs and allow for more money to go towards starting pitching (if that means retaining Stro and Thor or looking elsewhere).

What about Scherzer at 80 million for 2 years but only if he doesn't have a QO. WE CAN'T LOSE ANY MORE DRAFT PICKS PERIOD.

Baez did have a .371 OBP in his 47 games as a Met. Just sayin'

Marte would be nice and Loup is almost a must.

So with history now on our side, remember all the rumors two or three years back about trading Nimmo for Marte, then on the Pirates? If you had a do-over, would you do that one?

Marte is a better option than either Dickerson or Laureano. I would have jumped at Laureano last year, but who needs the baggage now? Cano II?

Besides the fact that he has already said he will NOT come to NY, there's no way he can get a QO. Any player traded in mid-year isn't eligible for a QO.

How about the Japanese Mike Trout, Seiya Suzuki, who may be posted this year?

No. Laureano is 23 years old, a gold glove caliber fielder and a leader in the A's clubhouse according to Bob Melvin. He is not a washed-up infielder who is 39.
