The lockout may have stopped Free Agent signings and the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft but the minor league portion was held this afternoon.
The Mets selected two RHP pitchers and had 2 selected from them.
Before the Draft started, the Mets announced that they had 36 players on their AAA roster. This was a major relief to me as the Roster posted on the Syracuse Mets website has far less. This insured that players like Carlos Cortes, Hayden Senger and others would not be selected.
In the 1st round, the Mets selected Alex Valverde, RHP, from the Tampa Bay system who pitched last year in Double A. 92 Ks in 72 innings, 69 hits, 29 walks, 6 HRs - 4.88 ERA and 1.361 WHIP. 6'2", 185 LB, 9/26/96.
Would love to see some of the metrics on these sliders from Alex Valverde, picked today by the #Mets in the MiLB Rule 5 Draft, which induced some silly swings. Valverde is particularly interesting as a 25-year-old who struck out 92 in 72 innings at Double-A last year.
He had above-avg whiff #'s while being younger than lg. average.

It's historically tough, but not impossible, for these types of guys to stick. One recent Mets minor league Rule 5 pick, Adam Oller, was a breakout prospect this year.
In the 2nd round, the Mets selected Carlos Ocampo from the Cub' Low A team, 67 Ks in 47.2 innings, 29 games - all in relief, 46 hits, 6 HRs, 15 walks, 6.23 ERA and 1.280 WHIP. 6'2", 181 LB, 9/3/98.

Ugly ERA in (A) ball last season but struck out 32% of the batters he faced while only walking 7%. Def wild though with 8 wild pitches and 8 HBP last season.

In the 3rd round, the Mets lost Allan Winans to the Braves and Tommy Wilson to the Mariners. Tommy Wilson only saw action in 10 games last year in Binghamton as he also spent time on the DL. Allan Winans pitched in both Brooklyn and Binghamton Overall 1.72 ERA in 47 innings, 26 games, 3 saves, 45 Ks, 15 walks, .809 WHIP.

You are allowed to protect 38 players on AAA roster for the minor league phase. Are you not allowed to draft if you have a full 38? Is it like the major league phase? Why did they only protect 36 otherwise?
Gus - Correct, you are not allowed to Draft if you have the full 38 on your AAA roster.
They protected 36 so they could draft two more.
Recent Minor League Free Agent signings like Matt Reynolds were part of that 36. If not they could have been eligible as well. Makes you wonder why teams sign minor league free agents before the Rule 5 draft. For example, John Nogowski, 1B, was non-tendered by the Pirates this off season, signed a minor deal with Giants and drafted yesterday by the Braves.
John, the Braves realize that Nogowski will be their first baseman once Freddie signs with the Mets :)
Funny, after Nogowski's little July hot streak that kept the Mets from getting needed wins against Pittsburgh, he did NOTHING the rest of the way. We should have had Nogosek pitch against him.
