Mets and ex-Mets hit pretty well yesterday - but the art of the HR? I never seem to see any from these guys.

Jose Martinez is a prime example of age-and-injury-related player decline - rookie at 28, at 28 and 29 hits over .300, then drops to .269, then .182 in injury shortened 2020, then as a Met never gets an AB due to injury in spring 2021, and in 2022 (now 33) is not on 40 man roster.

Baseball Ref in 2022 pegs him for a bit of a comeback: .243/.316/.386. Still, without good speed and fielding, he is marginal.

Tom your recent age-and-injury-related player decline posts are dead on. Makes you wonder about a team that goes out and spends over $200M on guys that are 33+ and trade guys in their 20's and young prospects. The proof will be in October.

John, true. It is an approach that, over time, can become very, very expensive if you do not hold onto prospects that will be above average major leaguers relatively soon.

Mr. Cohen can spend as much as he wants - but I don't want to see baseball destroyed in the process.

Jose Martinez, as Tom pointed out, is not on the 40-man. Since he didn't play at all in '21, but is now able to play in the DR, is he now a FA, or still on the' Cuse roster? IMO he could have value if we need an emergency callup in this season.

As to 30+ players in general, there are quite a few in recent years that have had decent part-time value up to their late 30s or even 40.

Think Medina, Pujols, Alou, et al.

Bill, Jose Martinez is a free agent.

Hopefully, he will be interested in trying 'Cuse again.
