Brandon Sproat

Florida

Sproat went unsigned as the No. 90 overall pick in the 2022 draft. He has tremendous arm talent, though putting it all together on the field has been streaky. Fastball, slider, cutter, changeup mix. Fastball sits 94-96 over extended outings, but Sproat can run it up to 99 over shorter appearances. It's a heavy heater with run and sink but lacks deception. Slider is a mid 80s, short breaker that he commands well at the bottom of the zone. Changeup is a firm, high-80s offspeed offering that is more of a ground ball pitch than a strikeout weapon right now. Despite the sensational stuff, Sproat must learn to hide the baseball and miss more bats to reach his ceiling. That being said, you'd be hard-pressed to find many arms available in the 2023 class that have this kind of exceptional athleticism and pure arm talent.

Leading the way are pitchers Brandon Sproat and Hurston Waldrep. Sproat, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound righthander, led the Gators in wins (9), starts (16), innings (89.2), and strikeouts (82) a year ago.

26. Brandon Sproat, RHP, Florida – The New York Mets seem to be starting a concerning trend of failing to come to terms with highly selected college arms, failing to sign Kumar Rocker in the first round in 2021 and watching Sproat head back to campus after being a third round pick this past draft (he was also the highest unsigned pick in 2019, electing to go to school rather than signing with the Texas Rangers who selected him in the seventh). Sproat heads back to Gainsville where he will team with Hurston Waldrep to form one of the better starting pitching duos in college baseball. Sproat features a big fastball and a slider that gets into the low 90s while he has a solid change and curveball to go with it.

Brandon Sproat (‘23 elig) sitting 94-96 T97 thru 2. Missing bats on mid-80s SL, showing CB at 80-82.

Sproat worked in the mid-90s, T97 early. Heavy sink to the FB, spun both CB & SL, got whiffs on the SL w/ more consistency

RHP Brandon Sproat - No. 16

We already know that Brandon Sproat has MLB potential, but his goal is to be a first-round pick. He’s been drafted in the first 10 rounds twice now and chosen not to sign, most recently with the Mets in 2022 as a third-rounder.

Sproat’s gambling on himself this year, and it’ll take some consistency to impress scouts any more than he already has. His fastball touches 99 mph and his slider can come in at 91. Velocity isn’t the problem for him. If he can learn to command his breaking pitches, especially against the SEC, Sproat could sneak into the first round.

16. Brandon Sproat, RHP, Florida

The highest unsigned player in the 2019 Draft (seventh round, Rangers), Sproat boosted his stock by allowing just seven earned runs in his final six starts last spring while pushing his fastball to 99 mph and his slider to 91. The Mets took him in the third round without discussing financial parameters, and he turned them down to try to go higher in 2023. He also can miss bats with a low-80s curveball and mid-80s changeup, and if he can maintain the improved control and command he showed down the stretch, he could fit in the first round.

RHP Brandon Sproat

Back in Gator Country for a fourth campaign, Sproat collected Southeast All-Region Second Team honors in 2022 after pitching to a 9-4 record and 3.43 ERA across 89 2/3 frames. Hailing from Pace, Fla., Sproat was tremendous for the Gators down the stretch, going 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA and .218 batting average against in his last six starts of the season. The right-hander wields a 3.92 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 117 1/3 career innings.

I like hearing the negatives on a guy, too. Now it is time to fix THIS:

“ Despite the sensational stuff, Sproat must learn to hide the baseball and miss more bats to reach his ceiling.”

Thst seems (to my uneducated eyes, anyway) yo be something very fixable. Of course, if it were easy, why couldn't his college coach have done it?

Bill, I am also concerned that he only fanned 82 in 90 innings…against college hitters. That won’t work against much tougher hitters. He has to be able to adjust.

Bill, I saw this from DiComo, making me feel better about Sproat:

“ Sproat returned to Florida, where he became a second-team All-SEC selection after striking out 134 batters in 106 1/3 innings. He fanned another 28 batters over four postseason starts, including 14 in two outings at the College World Series. “Obviously, he’s an extremely talented pitcher,” Mets special advisor to the general manager Steve Martone said. “We were impressed with him last year. He got even better this year. He showed improvement. … He bet on himself. It worked out for him, and we’re really excited for the future with him.””
