The Daily Mets Minor League Update - July 16TH

Morning.

Draft News -

Jim Callis (@jimcallisMLB)

Supplemental 4th-rder Austin Troesser signs with Mets for $350k (pick 135 value = $478,200). Mizzou Baseball RHP, 92-95 mph fastball touches 97, slider has its moments too

3rd-rder Kade Morris signs with Mets for $666,500 (full pick 101 value). Nevada Baseball RHP, 92-96 mph fastball, promising slider, throws strikes.

3rd-rder Nolan McLean signs with Mets for $747,600 (full pick 91 value). OSU Baseball RHP/OF, announced as two-way player, up to 98 mph w/fastball, flashes plus slider in mid-80s, massive raw power but comes w/swing & miss concerns. I've been a fan since his NC HS days

Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo)

The Mets have now signed each of their top four draft picks, plus quite a few others.

The team intends to use McLean as both a pitcher and a DH in the minors.

Brian Recca (@brian_recca)

The Mets have roughly $1.67MM remaining in their pool with the following top 10-round picks left to sign (Prospects Live rank in parentheses):

4. AJ Ewing, SS (101)

4c. Wyatt Hudepohl, RHP (216)

5.  Zach Thornton, LHP (142)

Slot amounts for those 3 picks total ~$1.4MM.

Mets News -

Ben Yoel (@Ben_Yoel)

Mets need to sell off anything not bolted to the floors. The obvious trade pieces are Robertson, Pham, Canha and Carrasco. However, I’d listen on pretty much anyone not named Alonso, Lindor, Álvarez or Nimmo.

Matthew Searle (@searlebaseball)

The Mets have four regulars with an OPS below .700:

Starling Marte:        .642

Jeff McNeil:              .653

Brett Baty:                .663

Daniel Vogelbach: .690

The pitching has been the bigger problem, but there are way too many dead spots in the lineup.

Daniel Marino (@Wassamatta4u)

The Braves don’t win divisions because of analytics. They win because they have very good players. Even with Mets suspect pitching, if we had that lineup we’d be in thick of it. I think the major push to analytics is killing this team. Get good players and we win. That’s it.

John Harper (@NYNJHarper)

Long-time scout on Verlander: "My theory is he had to work his tail off to come back from TJ surgery, pitched at a high level last year and it took a toll, especially at 40. But I can't blame the Mets. You wouldn't have predicted this much of a drop-off. He's not the same guy.

Mets History:

Road To Nowhere @RoadTwoNowhere)

OTD 1991 the Mets trade Ron Darling to the Expos for relief pitcher Tim Burke. “We’re supposed to say, ‘I’m happy for Ronnie’, right? That’s a lot of crap," says Kevin Elster. Only four players remain from the ’86 team: Elster, Sid Fernandez, Dwight Gooden, and Howard Johnson.

I just want the signed new kids playing games ASAP. No time to dawdle.

Jefry Rosa is my kind of hitter. Might be better than Pete Alonso right now. Or should I call him Ike Alonso?

Keeping an eye on Jeffry

Alvarez and Baty for Ohatani?

AJ Ewing signed yesterday for $675k which was about $190k above his slot value.

Armstrong-Crow is the #8 prospect in baseball on Prospects Live. Are we going to continue throwing prospects away as we clutch to a dream? Is Ohtani saving us? No.

Sorry, I made the PCA comment.
