Tom Brennan: Recurring Nightmare

A RECURRING, NAUSEATING NIGHTMARE

I have this recurring nightmare. In it, the Mets collapse yet again.

It is just a bad dream, I surmise, and I roll over and go back to sleep.

But…it felt so real…you know? This collapse thing. I feel so nauseous.

If they lose again tomorrow, it is reality. But, still, it depends on what others do. If they win, then it was just a nightmare. For the first time this year, a reality hit me: the Brewers are actually pretty good and not a result of their shitty division.

This was the first playoff game of the year for the Mets, and first ever for Sean Manaea. He had nerves and served it up in the first inning. That cannot happen again, and it is hoped he got it out of his system. The lineup went back to sleep, in the manner of which they slept in Atlanta. Yes, they woke up at the end but the Brewers made the defensive plays they had to make and their pitchers shut them down when they had to.

Stearns said in an pregame interview that the Brewers are a very good, young, talented team. I’m happy for them. It on the Mets now to earn their playoff spot. If they don’t, I would make some big changes because I realize:
1. When the heat is on, this group folds.
2. They need to get younger, faster, hungrier. And not just lip service.

New owner, new manager same old September Met swoon. Atlanta loses half its team to injuries yet still rises to the occasion. We are a team devoid of an ace the quality of a Wheeler or Sales. Lindor is a very good player but we have no Superstar hitters. We are in luxury tax hell leading to a 10 spot drop in the draft and loss of international money. Our minor leagues are a joke with practically all our top prospects hitting at the Mendoza line and our top pitching prospects pitching to a 7 ERA at Syracuse. We have no choice but to use Cohen’s money and outbid everyone for Burnes, Soto and whoever else is available or else we face yet aanother 5 year rebuild.

Gentlemen, I agree with you both. I honestly believe the Mets are cursed.

Consider that in 2022 they were cruising, and Marte gets a broken bone in his hand area on Sept 6. This year, on a 75 MPH pitch(!) on Sept 6, McNeil gets a broken bone in his hand area! I said, uh oh.

Then JD Martinez 0 for 35 - wait, the professional hitter? Impossible. He should not start another game, or the team needs psycho analysis.

Then Lindor, long shot for the MVP, gets hurt on a bizarre play and the guy who never misses innings, much less games, misses several crucial games.

Then they choke against Atlanta Tuesday in the series opener, naturally, can't win a big game, can you, it seems, since 1986.

Then a hurricane snarls their schedule badly.

Then Rhys Hoskins the Mets hater hits a grand slam.
Then, down 7-2, bags full, Bader flies out to the wall, and the wall at that spot juts back 3 feet and possibly costs him a game tightening grand slam.

Frankly, it is sickening. I feel like this is all we've lived as Mets fans in playoff type situations for, it seems like, forever.
