NBC - Former Padres great Tony Gwynn told Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune that he will soon begin radiation and chemotherapy treatments for parotid cancer, a cancer of the salivary glands. "I had surgery for a parotid tumor in 1997 and again three years ago and both those times there was no cancer," said Gwynn. "But this time they found a malignancy. They took out three lymph nodes and did all the tests and the results showed cancer in the parotid. "The doctors have told me they feel they caught the cancer early and there was not much of it there."
10-9-10 from: - baseballanalysts - Cesar Puello, OF, A - Experience: 3 years - Age: 19 - Puello produced promising numbers for a teen-aged speedster in 2010. The right-handed batter produced a triple-slash line of .292/.375/.359 in 404 at-bats, while also stealing 45 bases. He continues to make adjustments and his walk rate has improved in each of his three seasons and was at 6.8% in 2010, which is OK but not great. Although he hasn't shown much power in his ISO rate, Puello has seen his line-drive rate increase dramatically since 2008 (9 to 13 to 15%). Defensively, he made some over-aggressive errors but shows good range.

metsparadise - The plan going into 2010 was to have Daniel Murphy start first base for the New York Mets. That plan changed quickly when Murphy went down with a bad injury. The Mets decided that free agent pickup(minor league contract) and former Mets farm hand Mike Jacobs should be the one to man first base for the 2010 season. From day one of the regular season, it was clear that Jacobs was not the right man for the job. Jacobs(who was traded for Carlos Delgado before 2006), in seven games in 2010, batted .208 with one home run and two RBIs. In 24 at bats, Mike Jacobs struck out seven times- that's about a strikeout every three and half at bats
thebrooklyntrolley - This is what I now know about JOE McDONALD: FIRST ~ If the choice to replace him was anyone other than Frank Cashen,- It could have gone down as one of the worst decisions the post-Payson Mets ever made. There is more to Joe McDonald's resume no one bothers to address, in part because Frank Cashen is the best executive hire the post-Payson Mets ever made. I will revisit this later and elaborate. SECOND - Even as bad as it got between '77 and '79, the farm system was working fast and furious. Joe McDonald still had blood pumping through the system. He just was not allowed to make any free agents signings or make trades that would increase payroll. He was operating under a mandate from the Team President. I will elaborate later in this post on what kind of talent he was grooming in those dark years..

bleacherreport - Grade: C+ - Stats: (9-10, 4.20, 1.46) - At age 23, Niese is part of the Mets’ youth movement. He has shown a lot of potential and has given Mets fans reason to be excited to see his continued development next season. He has been able to strikeout major league hitters at a fairly high rate for such a young pitcher. He had a 7.7 K/9 rate this year.
