LAST GAME: In his return from the disabled list, Tobi Stoner
spun a gem for seven innings, facing just two of the minimum
while giving up two hits to pick up the win, 3-2. Stoner had
been on the DL with a partially torn labrum in his throwing
shoulder. Binghamton put their runs up one at a time, plating
a run on a Luis Sanchez error in the second to start. Then
Josh Thole hit is first AA home run in the third off New Hampshire
starter Rey Gonzalez to give the B-Mets a 2-0 lead. Finally,
two Gonzalez walks proved trouble in the sixth when
Carl Loadenthal singled up the middle with two outs to make
it 3-0. Julio De La Cruz relieved Stoner and proceeded to allow
the first two on base before getting an out. Roy Merritt came
in to close things out with two on and one out and proceeded
to load the bases with a walk before getting a flyball and a
groundout to end the inning, allowing just one run. In the
ninth, Brian Dopirak smashed his eighth home run of the
season to get within a run, but that was as close as things got.
Merritt notched his 10th save in 12 opportunities.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mike Antonini will make
his seventh start of the season tonight. He is coming off his
best start of the season, which came against Portland May 7.
Antonini went a season-high 6.2 innings giving up just one run
on five hits with six strikeouts to notch the win. For the season,
Antonini is 4-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 31.1 innings. He made
back-to-back starts against New Hampshire April 26 and May
2 winning the former and losing the latter. He gave up three
runs in six innings in the win on the 26th and gave up a fivespot
in the first inning on May 2, lasting just four innings to
take the loss. He was the Mets’ 18th round selection in 2007
out of Georgia College & State University.
RHP Casey Janssen will make a rehab start for the Fisher Cats
tonight. Janssen is on the mend from missing all of 2008 due
to surgery to repair a torn labrum. He made three starts with
Dunedin (High-A), throwing 12 innings giving up one run. In his
last start May 7, Janssen threw five innings giving up a run. He
last pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2007, when he made
70 appearances out of the pen with six saves and a 2.35 ERA.
He made nine starts with the Fisher Cats in 2005, posting a 3-
3 record and a 2.93 ERA. He was Toronto’s fourth-round pick
in 2004 out of UCLA.
ALL GOOD THINGS...: Two lengthy streaks came to an end last
night. Shortstop Ruben Tejada’s on-base streak came to an
end at 20 games, which is tied for the longest streak in the
Eastern League this season with Portland’s Aaron Bates and
Reading’s Quintin Berry. In addition, Lucas Duda’s 10-game
hit streak ended last night thanks to an 0-3 night. During the
streak, Duda hit .359 (14-39).
