You can pencil at least one appointment into Ruben Amaro Jr.'s winter meetings day-planner. Amaro and assistant GM Scott Proefrock will meet with representatives for free agent right fielder Jeff Francoeur, possibly as early as today, according to a baseball source who has spoken to Francouer. The Phillies are legitimately intrigued with the possibility of adding the right-handed hitting outfielder to their line-up. In fact, Charlie Manuel has apparently expressed interest in working with Francouer to help fix his approach at the plate. - philly.com
Philly Pick Werth Less:
Despite being a Type A free agent, the Phillies will not receive a first round pick as compensation for losing Jayson Werth who signed a seven-year, $126M deal with the Washington Nationals. As such, the Phillies, who have the last pick of the first round after finishing 2010 with the best record in baseball, will receive the Nationals second round pick, currently #42 overall. However, because Werth was the highest ranked free agent, the Phillies will receive the first pick in the compensation round, #34 overall. The Phillies will have back to back picks in the draft. The last pick of the first round, #33, and the first pick of the compensation round, #34. -

XMLBScout on Werth:
So what did the Nationals think when they signed Jayson Werth to that lucrative deal? Well we need to compete and he's just the answer to helping us get to the NL East Pennant? We'll now be in the Wild Card hunt? Well, let's see here. Could it be that Mr. Boras has other clients? Will this signing help those clients with their bargaining power and use Mr. Werth's length and amount of contract to their advantage? Absolutely!! This is what drives people nuts in baseball and the outside world of baseball, the fans, like you and me! Why go to the trouble to over pay for a player on the open market after you have been in the basement in your division for a bit, you are trying to rebuild and contend in your division and in the league and this one player is going to make that much difference after you already lost a big banger, like Adam Dunn? This signing is going to really set things on fire with the other free-agent signings yet to come and it just might have screwed up Boston & San Diego's deal to trade Adrian Gonzalez. What is Adrian Gonzalez going to want now to sign for and for how long? How many years do these guys have left to be productive MLB players? They may have already hit their threshold for production and are being overpaid for their past achievements and the clubs that sign them are taking a huge risk to think those players will continue to have those types of years ever again, if they ever do! - xmlbscout

Now it looks like the Mets might find a taker for Carlos Beltran after all. The idea of trading Beltran to the Red Sox began as a slight ripple Tuesday morning here at the Dolphin Resort. But by later that night, and into early Wednesday, it apparently had gained significant momentum, with the Boston Globe reporting that the Mets and Red Sox again discussed a potential trade of the $119-million centerfielder

Takahashi, an MLB rookie in 2010, filled pretty much every role over the course of the year. He was an innings-eating middle reliever at the beginning of the season before being moved in the rotation in May. He returned to the bullpen in August and took over as the Mets' closer in September. I've chosen to examine both Villanueva and Takahashi in this post because they have quite a few similarities beyond the fact that they both switched leagues this week. - http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/
