An Interesting Thought for the Bench

By David Rubin

Prior to the arbitration deadline, the Los Angeles Angels of Omaha, South Carolina & Madagascar released utility infielder, Kevin Frandsen. I think Frandsen would be an interesting addition to the Mets bench, as he would be a low-cost alternative who can play third, second, first, some shortstop and even can fill-in in the outfield. Frandsen has rebounded well from having blown out his left Achilles tendon in early March of 2008, after which he bounced from the Giants to the Red Sox and finally to the Angels. He went on a hitting tear for a while last season, seeing his average soar to .300 before coming back to earth and finishing at .250. While this wouldn't represent an "exciting" or "major" signing, it's worth at least exploring in an off-season where money (or lack of it) is a dwindling resource.
