The Mack Report - DJ, Paulino, Dick Scott, Beltran to BoSox, Extended Camp Players

The Mack Report – December 8, 2010

I like both the acquisitions of RP D.J. Carrasco and C Ronny Paulino.

Omar wanted Carrasco when he was a Pirate and he led the AL in innings pitched when he was a White Sox. Side armed guy who doesn't strike out a lot but causes mucho ground balls. Hasn't had a bad season in the last three. Great addition.
Paulino is a fantastic pickup, regardless what he got caught taking last year. .896 OPS vs. lefties... add that to Josh Thole's .783 vs. righties, and the Mets are doing just fine behind the plate. Much better defensively than Josh.

The Mets hired Dick Scott as Field Manager, the position Terry Collins had last year. I’ve never heard a better explanation for minor leaguers than what he said in an old interview:“For pitchers, they have to throw strikes. At the lower levels, through the Florida State League, guys have good numbers, but they don’t command their fastball. If you can’t throw your fastball for a strike, you won’t pitch in the big leagues. At the lower levels, guys swing at pitches out of the zone, so the numbers are inflated. At Double-A and Triple-A, guys won’t swing at those pitches, so instead of it being 1-and-2, it’s 2-and-1.

For hitters we want guys who can control the strike zone and have good on-base percentage.”

A local Boston radio station discussed the possibility of a deal… Red Sox get Reyes and Beltran for Ellsbury, Scutaro, Dice K and 2 prospects package.

So… we’re done listing the current Mets players that should be kept, and assigned to a team. Here’s what our rosters look like so far for the 2011 season, based on 2012 need:

Buffalo (24):

If this was etched in stone (which it isn’t, of course), Buffalo is still missing a 5th starter, Binghamton needs another utility player, Savannah is overstocked with pitchers and short at least one outfielder, and St. Lucie could also use another backup in the field.

This doesn’t mean there aren’t more players still in the system. I left a number of players that are still under contract with the Mets off this list. Some due to injuries, others due to poor performances. Either way, they wouldn’t be on my 25 at the beginning of the season. They are:

Pitchers: Tobi Stoner, Zach Dotson, Shaun Tabrett, Taylor Whittenton, Jeff Walters, Chase Huchingson, Jacob deGrom, Darin Gorski, Jeff Kaplan, Eduardo Aldama, Elvin Ramirez, Marcos Tabata, John Holdzkom, Eddie Kunz, Jonathan Koultas, Steve Winnick, Edgar Ramirez, Guilaume Leduc, Pedro P. Martinez, Luis Rojas, Brett Mitchell, Jhonathan Torres, Scott Shaw, Brian Valenzuela, Samuel Martinez, Tony Feliz

Infielders: Luke Stewart, Kevin Weijgertse, Ray Van Gurp, Hector Pellot , Yucarybert De La Cruz, Luis Nieve, Miquel Tejada, Jet Butler, Richard Lucas, James Schroeder, Brandon Brown, Josh Dunn

Catchers: Patrick Farrell, Nohisglin Rivero, Amauris Valdez, Taylor Freeman, Jean Luc Blaquiere , Juan Torres

Not to be picky, but you have Ryan Fraser on both the StLu & SAV squads.
