Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are talking with teams about left-hander Jon Niese.
The idea is to identify teams who deem the price for Gio Gonzalez too high, but are still willing two part with multiple prospects, especially position players. Niese, 25, is under team control though 2015, so he could be a very attractive trade chip. The young left-hander had a 4.40 ERA and 138/44 K/BB ratio over 157 1/3 innings this past season.

Unless its for a good catching prospect AND pitching prospect, i'm probably not interested. Hey the Yankees have a few good catching prospects. Actually, about three really good ones.and they're looking for pitching. Bet you Sandy has placed that call. Would they part with Montero or Romaine for Niese?
Rockies: Wilin Rosario, c and one of: Trevor Story, ss/3b, Tyler Anderson, lhp or Josh Rutledge, ss PLUS a starting pitcher to fill Niese's spot.
Redsox: Start with Ryan Lavarnway and add others from there.
Padres: Lots of pitching which is why they don't match up. I will be unhappy if the deal hinges on a Bartlett for Niese swap.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Niese hasn't been that great. He's has injuries and his era has never been under 3. Remember, they're looking for packages less then what the A's are asking for Gonzalez. This is Jon Niese. It'll be a package of good prospects. Maybe one great one. Not a great package.
Rumor mill says Yanks are willing to eat $8M of Burnett's salary. Burnett & Montero.
If they trade Niese, hopefully it turns out a swell as when they traded Lee Mazilli 30 years ago for Ron Darling and Walt Terrell. I'm sure Frank Cashen took heat for that one back then but it was quite successful over the long haul.
I think Niese has a future with the Mets as a #3/#4 starter. I would have to get back a couple of prospects at positions we are lacking (C, OF) in order for a deal to make sense.
Otherwise, he is worth keeping. Young lefty starters with potential are hard to find.
I trust Sandy and Co to make the right call..........Mike

In short, an unfortunate BABIP and a misleading ERA has made fans like Charles come up with opinions like "Niese hasn't been that great". Playing a full season with better luck last year and Niese could have easily won 15 games.
He has added a couple ticks to his fastball and his curve was a top-5 offering in the MAJORS with that pitch.
He is still working on his fitness and is getting better. Sandy and co. know all of this and I am sure there are only going to pull the trigger if it is worth it beyond doubt. Niese is an elite talent and I think he could be a #2, even with all the pitching depth we have. I hope he stays.
Also, explain to me why it would be a good idea to trade your only left-handed starter as of now? Especially in the NL...that makes no sense. Especially considering Familia, Mejia, Harvey, Wheeler are all RHP.
I do not think Niese is going to get moved.
Steve, I don't think he's pitched poorly. I just don't think he's pitched great. Advanced stats do tell alot, but he's basically put up the same stats every year as far as ERA and WHIP, while also failing to register a winning record...ever. As far as his fitness, I'd say that he probably should have been in better shape to begin with instead of "working on it now". This doesn't help the Mets in negotiations. When two teams sit and talk turkey, they both know the advanced stats that your armed with that you have just said with some better luck, Niese couldve won 15. Unfortunately, the other team is going to negotiate using the regular, on back of the baseball card stats to justify the smallest package possible. They want the best deal for them, which is why, unless someone really believes in Niese's future, I don't see a move here. Niese could've won 15 with that better luck and also executing some better pitches in tight spots. I truly like Niese, and believe he'll be our Cliff Lee at some point because I think he has that type of potential. My opinion that he "hasn't been that great" is only because he hasn't been that great. I mean, whats "great"? Great is...great. Yes,"great" doesn't always shine through to a winning record, but that wasn't what happened with Niese last year. Verlander pitched great last year. Halladay, Lee, and Sabathia pitched great last year. Niese was good. Niese has always been good. What he hasn't been...is great. I really don't want him to be traded and hope he'll be the Mets number 3 starter for the next seven or eight years. On the other hand, I trust Sandy and Company tremendously and if they think they're making out like bandits on a potential deal, I'll trust them to make that call.
It seems both the Rockies and the Blue Jays have interest in both Murphy AND Niese. That's the foundation for a big trade.
Niese is nice and has the potential to be very good. However, he has yet to show the stamina to pitch well throughout an entire season. I don't want to see him traded and feel he's an important piece going forward given his age, contract status, and the fact that he pitches from the left.
But...I'll echo Charles - I don't want him traded but I won't cry if the team does better trading him than holding onto him.
I guess what I'm arguing, Charles, is that he does have the potential to be great. But I think we agree there. Given that his average fastball was 90.5 (and has improved each of the last three years) tells me that he is continuing to improve. In terms of arsenal, if that increase in velocity continues for even just one more season, he could be a poor man's Jon Lester.
Jon Niese was one of the 10 most unlucky starters in baseball last year.
I love the guy.
I totally agree steve...
