60. C Juan Centeno
A great story here.
Centeno was a 32nd round draft pick in 2007 that knocked around the system, mainly as a 3rd string catcher. The most at bats he had gotten was in 2009, with Brooklyn, and he hit only .164.
I had him as a casualty in 2010, but he wound up back in Brooklyn, getting himself 89 at bats and hitting… are you ready… .371/.417/.517/.934.
9-22-10 2011 Forecast: - nothing but blue sky for Juan. Centeno actually turned Blake Forsythe into a DH during his streak and the two of them will probably split time as C/DH in Savannah come spring. Normally, I would say he’d get a #1 slot in Brooklyn, but he’s being pushed by Albert Cordero
4-15-11: - the dream continues… Centeno tore up Brooklyn (.371) last year and he’s wasting no time making a name for himself in the Florida League. As of 4-15, he’s hitting a remarkable .545/.615/.909/1.524. No, we don’t expect these numbers all year, but we can dream too…
8-10-11: - Stock Up – Juan Centeno – Centeno went 2-4 in the first game of today’s doubleheader and now sports a .305 batting average. Centeno was a quiet 32nd round draft pick in 2007 and has had a hard time getting at bats his entire five year Mets career. He hit .320 last year in 125 combined A/A+/AA and it’s nice to see he’s finally starting in his Rule V season.
8-30-11: - 58 – C Juan Centeno – It looks like we may have another decent hitting cather prospect. Juan has taken the FSL by storm, hitting .327 in 150-AB. Yes, he had to share time with Dock Doyle (.294), but, in my book, he has earned a starting position in the Binghamton battery next season. Oh yeah… only three errors. ETA: possible backup Mets catcher in 2014
10-3-11: - http://www.metsminorleagueblog.com/season-review-the-full-season-catchers - Pena’s back-up, Juan Centeno, who turns 22 in November, is interesting. He’s tiny (listed at 5’9″, 172 lbs) but he makes contact and hit .318/.368/.382 in 157 AB spread over 52 games. The Mets rewarded him with a trip to the Arizona Fall League, where he can prove he deserves a spot on the 40-man roster. He’ll be rule 5 eligible this winter, and while it’s a stretch to think a team would want to carry him on their MLB roster all year in 2012, the Nationals did pluck Jesus Flores from the Mets straight from the Florida State League. Centeno threw out 39% of opposing base-stealers (19 of 49). After backing up Blake Forsythe in Brooklyn in 2010, and Pena in St. Lucie in 2011, he seems poised to grab the bulk of the playing time in double-A Binghamton next year.
11-13-11: - http://www.metsblog.com/2011/11/13/afl-round-up-juan-lagares-has-been-stellar-this-fall - •C Juan Centeno has had an inconsistent fall season with Peoria although he’s hit .303 over his last ten games. He’s hit .250 with a .340 on base percentage and five RBI in 13 games this fall.
