• The Minnesota Twins sent former Japanese batting champion, Tsuyoshi Nishioka to the minors yesterday. I’m sure this wasn’t in the Twins, or Yoshi’s plans when they agreed to a three-year, $9.25mil deal before the 2011 season.
• I found it interesting that Chipper Jones had told Buster Olney days before Miguel Cabrera’s injury that he would not take grounders on that same field because of the dried out conditions.
• Grant Balfour has been named the closer for the Oakland A’s.
• Ex-Boston Red Sox pitching ace, Mel Parnell, has passed at 89 years of age. He pitched his entire career for the Red Sox because that’s what they did in those days. He was the winningest (is that a word?) LHP in Red Sox history.
• Jenna-Louise Coleman announced as the new Doctor Who companion
• Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria has damage to his right elbow and will most probably have TJS.
• The Washington Nationals have announced that Stephen Strasburg will be the opening day starter.

Terry Collins also has resolved to give left fielder Jason Bay and infielder Jordany Valdespin exposure to the position.
Valdespin has played only one minor league game in the outfield. During winter ball in the Dominican Republic, Licey manager Rafael Landestoy had Valdespin take fly balls in the outfield pregame, but Valdespin never made it into a game.
Landestoy also is the Mets' international field coordinator, but Collins said the winter-league decision to have Valdespin get some outfield exposure was coincidental and not a Mets directive.
"I can play outfield, too, because I practiced in the offseason taking fly balls in left field, center, right," said Valdespin, who hit a combined .294 with 17 homers, 60 RBIs and 37 steals in 55attempts between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Buffalo last season. "I want to play in the big leagues. So no matter where I play, I want to play in the big leagues and help the team."
Nobody ever said that Spin isn't the biggest fan of... Spin.
