6/7/13

Draft 13 - NYM 2nd Round (48th overall) Pick - RHP Andrew Church - Palo Verde (CA) HS

Andrew Church is a 2013 RHP/OF with a 6-3 199 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Palo Verde HS. Nice squared shouldered athletic build, good present strength. Slow tempo leg raise delivery with some drift, arm works well, high 3/4's arm slot, some effort on release. Primary fastball pitcher, fastball topped out at 90 mph, mostly straight, throws a slurve type breaking ball with sweeping shape and some depth, good velocity on breaking ball, threw strikes with both pitches, didn't see change up. Development of off speed pitches will be key to future. Good student - LINK

Church didn't pitch much in 2013 after having a dispute with his coach.

Andrew Church is a 2013 RHP/3B, SS with a 6-1 170 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Palo Verde. With a tall athletic build, Church certainly looks the part of a prospect. When he takes the mound, he backs it up. With a fast arm and good athleticism he is able to maintain his body control well throughout his delivery and repeats well. Delivery is a bit violent but well controlled, creating some deception. He also hides the ball well throughout the delivery and gets good tailing action on his Fastball. His breaking ball can get a bit slurvy at times but flashed good 11-5 break when it comes out clean and projects to improve. Also flashed a developing Changeup and holds runners well. Still adding polish to his arsenal but has the talent to be a highly effective pitcher at the next level. Has very good potential with the bat, with good bat speed and strength in his swing, showed good swings in games and combined with his arm strength make him an interesting 3B prospect as well. Very interesting 2-way follow. Good student. Named to Top Prospect Team.

He started his prep career at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, then transferred to Palo Verde High in 2011 but couldn’t pitch because of transfer rules, or in 2012 because of a dispute with the coach. He switched to Basic High in suburban Henderson for this season, an unconventional transfer because Church is already 18 and moved into an apartment by himself to get into his new school’s boundaries. Church has an athletic build at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds and has smoothed out his delivery. His fastball sits in the 90-93 mph range and touches 95. He holds his velocity well, and his curveball shows flashes of being a plus pitch. He also throws a slider and a changeup. If Church goes in the top two rounds, he’ll likely pass on his commitment to San Diego.

I had Church at #87.
