Dylan Covey was one hell of a high school phenom out of Maranatha High School in California. He was ready to become an instant millionaire and then was diagnosed with diabetes two months before the draft. Things went to hell, his 'game' sort of went soft, and now, being a junior in college, he gets the chance to prove all this is behind him.
Stats this year at the University of San Diego (34-23): 4-4, 5.22, 17-G, 15-starts, 69.0-IP, 63-K, 39-BB
Fastball: In this early showcase outing, Coveydidn't have the velocity he's shown in the past, but he touched 93 mph. He can reach back and blow away a hitter when he needs to.
Fastball movement: He usually has some heavy life to his pitch, with sink and bore and late giddyup.
Curve: He throws a power curve, up to 80-81 mph. It's a plus pitch, maybe a 70 on the scouting scale.

Dylan Covey’s name has circulated in the prospect and scouting world for quite a long time now. We’ve profiled a number of top college players in this year’s class who were drafted out of high school a few years back. But, Covey wasn’t exactly a token draft pick - this was an elite high school talent who was a 14th overall pick in the first round by the Milwaukee Brewers back in 2010. He was an Perfect Game All-American in 2009 and was undoubtedly one of most highly touted prep arms in the class. The Brewers wanted him, and it appeared Covey was ready to turn pro, but a bad break at the time kept that from happening.

Mack - this is the kind of guy Boston likes to draft in the 2nd/3rd round. I like it too. All upside and, if it works, you have a front end starter someday. Come on Sandy, pick him with your 4th pick.

I'd even go round 3 for this guy. I see him possibly more as a reliever now but could be a damn good one. He's a high risk, high reward guy but just a few months ago he was a consensus first-rounder. He had a tough season but so did Matt Harvey his sophomore campaign at NC. Covey would be a project but a damn good investment. The Mets have experience with diabetic players and he'd likely be under slot.
