PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 28, 2018) – The Palm Beach Cardinals blanked the St. Lucie Mets 2-0 on Saturday at First Data Field.
The Cardinals scored the only run they needed in the second inning when Jose Martinez lifted a RBI sac fly to bring home Chase Pinder.
A wild pitch by Matt Pobereyko in the eighth inning allowed Kramer Roberston to score Palm Beach’s second run.
For the first time this season the Mets were shut out in a nine-inning game. They mustered just three hits. Andres Gimenez went 1 for 4 with a double.
Four Cardinals pitchers combined for the shutout. Starter Anthony Shew pitched the first 3.1 innings and did not come back out after the game was delayed for an hour by a power outage.
When play resumed in the fourth inning, reliever Colton Thomson stranded Gimenez at third base by striking out two batters to maintain the Cardinals 1-0 lead.
Thomson struck out six in 3.1 innings.
Yeison Medina tossed 2.1 scoreless innings. Will Latcham handled the ninth for his first save.
Mets starter Michael Gibbons took a tough loss. He allowed just the one run on the sac fly in four innings. He retired the final seven batters he faced.
Three Mets relievers – Adam Atkins, Thomas McIlraith and Matt Pobereyko – did not give up an earned run in five innings.
So far in the three-game series the Mets bullpen has given up just one unearned run in 13.2 innings. Every reliever on the roster has pitched.
The Mets (10-12) and Cardinals (12-11) wrap up their series at First Data Field on Sunday. First pitch is at noon.
