AKRON HANDS BINGHAMTON FIRST LOSS: Despite a three-run seventh inning, the Rumble Ponies suffered their first loss of 2018, 6-3, against the RubberDucks Monday night. Akron plated the game’s first four runs and never relinquished the lead, earning Shao-Ching Chiang his first win of the season.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Joseph Shaw makes his second career appearance with Binghamton, but first as a Rumble Pony. The 6-foot-5 Texan made a spot start for the B-Mets in September 2016, losing at Altoona. Shaw spent all of 2017 with St. Lucie, posting a 7-5 mark in 18 starts. He won his final four outings of the season.
DON’T LEAVE ME HANGIN’: On Monday night, the Rumble Ponies loaded the bases in three consecutive innings (5th, 6th, & 7th). Binghamton left the bases stuffed in the 5th and 6th before rallying for three runs in the 7th inning. Even so, Binghamton stranded two more when Patrick Mazeika was picked off of third to end the threat. The nine baserunners left on base is a season-high.
GERSON HEATING UP: In 3.0 innings (10 batters faced) this season, the hard-throwing right-hander has 8 strikeouts. Last season, the 22-year-old had the third-highest velocity in the lower minors (98.1 mph), with a minimum of 100 fastball pitches. He was traded from the Red Sox to the Mets the deal that sent RHP Addison Reed to Boston.
QUICK HITS: OF John Mora collected two more hits on Monday, giving him back-to-back multi-hit games. INF Levi Michael finished 2-for-4 in yesterday’s loss, his first multi-hit game as a member of the Mets organization. C Tomas Nido is the only Rumble Pony with two multi-RBI games and is 5-for-his-last 11 with 5 RBI.
BIEBER FEVER: RHP Shane Bieber is expected to make his second start of 2018 on Tuesday night. The 22-year-old made his Double-A debut in 2017 against the Rumble Ponies at Canal Park. On 7/25, Bieber tossed 6.2 innings of no-run baseball and struck out five. The RubberDucks won 1-0 on a walk-off sacrifice fly from INF Tyler Kreiger.
THE ROAD AHEAD: Binghamton readies for its first road trip of the season after a league-wide off day on Thursday. The Rumble Ponies head to Portland for a three-game set at Hadlock Field, before trekking to New Hampshire for a four-game series. Red Sox LHP Drew Pomeranz is expected to pitch against the Ponies this Friday night.
UP NEXT: The Rumble Ponies conclude their week-long homestand with the series finale against the RubberDucks on Tuesday night. RHP Drew Gagnon makes his second start of the season, he’ll challenge Akron’s RHP Aaron Civale. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM at NYSEG Stadium.
