Mike’s Mets: Thoughts on George Springer and Jared Porter.

Joel Sherman NY Post: “The Mets let Springer’s camp know over last weekend that they were willing to go to six years at $120 million, but no further. At that point, the Mets were pretty much out of contention, as Springer headed toward the six-year, $150 million pact he reached Wednesday with the Blue Jays.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets’ next GM will need to have extensive MLB contacts. “’One of the things we will be lacking is sort of the same breadth of contacts and information that we were able to get through Jared’” Alderson said on a Tuesday conference call. ‘Jared has lots of contacts in the game — not just at the GM level, but at the assistant GM level and below. That’s a rich source of information and can lead to smaller deals that fill out our roster. That is an area we are going to have to pick it up.’

For me, the player to watch in Mexico is Sebastian Elizalde who the Mets signed as a minor league free agent before the 2020 season.  He had 11 HRs and 45 RBIs in 46 games during the regular Mexican Pacific season.  Solid Left-Handed Power hitter.  Here's hoping the Mets give him another shot in 2021.

The Final Series is also set in Venezuela as Caribes de Anzoategui beat Caribes de Anzoategui 10-4. (Box Score) Minor League Mets Pitchers Yeizo Campos and Jaison Vilera are on Caribes.

In the other Game, Cardenales de Lara 11 Tigres de Aragua 2 (Box Score).  Ex-Minor League Met Cesar Puello went 2 for 4 with a run score, walk, and a K.  Cesar was one of the few players who played in two different leagues this winter as he played in the Dominican prior to Venezuela.

Boy, that's a lot of stuff, great job.

Pete may be # 7, but if Dom Smith's bat in 2020 was no aberration, couldn't he be # 2 overall 1B, had he been ranked as a 1B? It is very possible, if DH comes thru, that Smith will be the 1B and Pete the DH.

I have some thoughts on George Springer risks in an upcoming article.

I feel bad for Porter - everything is cancel culture these days. If it represented a pattern of behavior, yes, great that he was cancelled, but if it was temporary craziness, I feel bad - but let's move on and let everyone learn to not be careless.

John From Albany said...

Tom - if it was temporary craziness it needed to be dealt with as soon as it happened where he worked at the time. But it didn't and you can't have a guy in a major position of power in your organization when they abused that power in a lesser position. The fact that MLB has not done a better job dealing with stuff over the years makes things a bigger problem down the road and lead to firings.

Did Jeff Passan know about these things when he was saying that Porter was perfect for the job? We don't know but he does admit to having the info for 2 weeks before reporting it.

Tom Brennan said...

John, I agree largely. I don't dive into details on stuff like this. If I were Passan, unless I had some sense Porter did this more than just then, I would have left it alone. The guy is now destroyed in baseball. Does the punishment fit the crime? I guess he'll become a day trader.

Everyone involved should have dealt with this the second it became known. If the Cubs or D-Backs knew shame on them. The Mets should have done a better back ground check but as soon as they found out about it, they dealt with it.

John, I agree, this needed to be dealt with quickly and decisively, which they did when the report surfaced. I truly hope there was no cover-up hoping this would die away without becoming known.

You can feel a lot of things for/about Jared Porter, but feeling bad for him is not one of them. He needs to be made an example of as these heinous violations of people's rights are not acceptable. I suppose I might cut him a little more slack if this was a thoughtless prank by a 16 year old who was shown the error of his ways, but Porter supposedly had a fully developed 36 year old brain at the time. In 2016 we had just gone thru (or were going through at the time) of some very public and disgusting examples of how not to treat one another by a certain political candidate at the time. While one person (at least) in this case was certainly violated, the fact of the matter is that these acts violate all women together. Aggression towards women, other races, other religions, or any other group or subgroup cannot be tolerated in 21st century society.

I just read a piece that was written by Doug Glanville, former outfielder for the Philles and others talking about a cab driver in LA not allowing him to ride from the airport to the hotel. That was the 1990's. When will we have enough? Every person has rights that should not be broken. To close, Porter broke that person's right to privacy and he must pay for that.

I hope this site will also publish the excellent piece that colleague Mike Steffanos on the Mike's Mets site wrote yesterday. It is an exceptional article.

I apologize for getting off topic, but thank you for listening.

Thanks 1969. You just said what needed to be said a lot better than me.
