If the season started tonight... and all you had was your current roster (but they were all healthy), what would your 5 man rotation be?
Thor is headed to the Angels, so factor that in.

I didn’t see Thor’s move to LA coming…….odd decision, IMO. Unfamiliar team and league, one year deal (like our QO) so he has to prove he is back in order get a bigger deal down the road. Or, stay with a team and league you are familiar with and have a better shot at restoring your value for 2023 (albeit, for a couple million less).
Not to mention how much the Mets have invested in him over the years and his stated desire to stay with the club and in NY. So much for loyalty, Thor…….I could see if you got an insane, multi year deal from the Angels, but leaving in this fashion is a slap in the face to the Mets, IMO. Let’s see if he can stay healthy moving forward.
At least we get a pick out of it…….ok,I am done ranting.
The 2022 rotation is a bit light due to defections, injuries and pending FA’s.
Jake is your ace and Carracsco (if healthy) will fill in somewhere in the middle, with Walker and Megill rounding out the back. I see a big hole behind Jake and a need for some depth, too.
Makes you wonder if we go after a QO protected FA starter now, with the pick from Thor’s move providing insurance?
Stroman also becomes a must sign, right?
Without hiring from the outside this would leave an opening for a pitcher who was in AAA this past year. This would give Oller, Josh Walker, Peterson, Trevor Williams, Yamamoto, Szapucki all opportunities. But I expect the Mets to sign free agents and/or trade for pitchers.
Maybe this gives the Mets a rebuilding year and allows some of their young players a chance to play. Like Lee, Vientos and Baty.
Guys like Cueto,Grey,Matz and Grienke Eric look a lot better.
Picked my grandson up at school today. His first words to me were: "See that Thor is headed west? I thought you told me with a new owner, things were going to be different? Isn't it the same as you said it was under the Wilpons?"
Staff headed by question mark deGrom. Followed by question mark Carracsco and question mark Walker. Looks like the best pitchers are in the running for the fifth spot.
Without way overpaying, what free agent would want to come to Citi Field?
Per the constraints of the thread, current roster, assuming all are healthy would seem to be:
1) deGrom
2) Carrasco
3) Walker
4) Megill
5) Peterson
6) Lugo
7) Williams
8) Yamamoto
x) Oller (not on the 40 man roster)
y) Walker (not on the 40 man roster)
Now, do I expect that 1-5 come April? Nope.
I just saw an interesting comment that the Mets had no opportunity to counter offer after Los Angeles offered $21M and someone said that even if they had, they would probably feel that they could turn that $21M into a less risky option. So my choices for two slots are:
From the free agent market:
Marcus Stroman
Jon Gray
Carlos Rodon
Alex Wood
and on the trade front
Luis Castillo
Sean Manaea
One of the young guns on Cleveland
One of the young guns on Miami
Stroman and Gray probably have the best health records of the free agents, but I'd love to see another lefty.
It would not take much more than $21M to bring in both Gray and Wood. Stroman will be expensive, but probably worth it if pairing him up with another guy on the trade front with some control left.
Mike Freire: my understanding of the compensation rule is that signing a free agent under QO means losing your 2nd pick. the team losing the player gains not that pick, but a pick at the end of that round, so the Mets will gain a pick after the second round, estimated to be around the 70th pick. in years gone by, the team losing the player would get the acquirers actual pick, so the LA's actual pick, which I think was around 40. However, this year, the Mets 2nd pick would be it's second 1st round pick, #14. doesn't sound fair to me, but gaining the 70th pick doesn't begin to compensate for losing the 14th.
