A story in the NYP last week had us revisiting the dust up between Jeff O'Neil and Francis Lindor the the pathway leading from the dugout to the clubhouse.
Why bring this up again?
A leak proceeding a trade?
I mean, Frankie isn't going anywhere.

If there is a trade, the Mets will have another opportunity to sell low. McNeil will be a bargain for a lot of teams if he goes.
The Green-Haired Choker will however stay - forever. His contract may outlive some of us.
Maybe he won't choke in 2022 as he did in 2021. Let's hope not.
I'm still not seeing both Mcneil and Dom returning and not sure JD stays either. Although they are all cheap so who knows,
McNeil is a good player and should be in the plans. I would investigate first, and I have to expect Alderson already did.
Lindor had a fine second half and should have won the gold glove with his league leading 20 OAA.

As for Dove’s comments, now that Conforto left the wiggle room is a bit more for the lefties but Cano joining hurts that. I’d jettison Cano first, then Dom, then Davis. However, Alderson’s comments about Cano being in the picture at 3B or 2B makes it look bad for McNeil if they sign Baez or Bryant. I hope that we get a level headed person at GM, not another Alderson with a different name.
Fit Cano for pinstripes. Sell him a subway pass to head to 161 St.
I think it is just a "bored" media trying to stir the pot.......which is their specialty when it comes to Mets' coverage. After all, who really cares about a dust up that happened six months ago? Of course is was an altercation and not about what they supposedly saw in the tunnel. I am quite sure that the '86 Mets had a few of these "disagreements", but the internet and the need for constant "hard hitting" stories didn't exist then.
Regarding McNeil, he is still relatively inexpensive and quite versatile so he stays put, at least if I were the GM. If they don't retain Baez, McNeil is my starting second baseman next year (with Cano providing depth at 2B, DH and maybe 3B). If Baez does return, then McNeil is my "super sub".......Ben Zobrist like.
I am less concerned about Dom......if he stays, that's fine. He isn't going to fetch a great deal in return after a down year and he is also relatively inexepensive, but less versatile then McNeil, IMO.
I agree with Mike. In the quiet times before the announcement of new GM, signing of free agents, etc... the NYP needs to attract readers, so they dredge up any controversy they can. I would like to see a NYM future with both Lindor and McNeil on the team.
Lindor will be here. May he win an MVP and win the Roberto Clemente award. McNeil? I can see the Zobrist comp.
Funny thing is, if inflation runs amok, and NY taxes on the super-earners climb, Lindor’s contract might be cheap in a few years. NY thanks you for your tax dollars, sir.
I think you do both. You solicit offers for McNeil and then strategically laugh at them. See who ups the ante.

Mike the problem with that logic is the 86 Mets WON and were still in hope mode.
It still boggles the mind signing Lindor to that contract when I bet with the plethora of SS available he could have gotten Baez and Lindor for say 400 million. By the way did the club cover the cost for Baez's earring? When he lost that earring (I heard it was worth $200k) did anyone else think "how did we really get to this point"? I know just a crazy rant from an old man who paid 10 bucks for a 73' WS ticket.
Agreed Gary………but if the “bad boys” from that era were current Mets, the coverage would be much worse then it was then, IMO.
Oh and Tom raised a good point about NY (taxes)…….. maybe that’s part of what Sandy was getting at when he said NYC presents a unique and challenging market? NYS seems to be emptying out a bit…….they are all here in Florida!

Just a feel here: there is no way McNeil is still with the Mets on opening day 2022. This will become Lindor's team very soon. I could be wrong, but I don't see McNeil ever playing second base here again, and I suspect he won't be playing outfield here either.
Add that to the fact that realistically, McNeil has the most trade value of any of the 'trade chips' on the team. You can argue that it would be selling low, but i am not sure that is true. I think his value has been established and he will get back a decent return - certainly better than Smith or Davis at this point.
Perhaps some starting pitching like Luis Castillo or one of Oakland's guys might be a good starting point. I would probably do McNeil for Castillo even up at this point.
I hope reasonable confidence that I will be able to predict the 26 man roster the night before the 2022 season opener.
