Kids having fun playing a kid's game
Ahh, the Developmental Summer League, or DSL, where very, very young men from Central America get to play pro ball.
Some are signed to big contracts.
Some, regardless of $$, play like real dandies.
Stats are through July 1. Squeezing in a little July R&R, so I wrote this a bit in advance.
One non-Mets guy in the DSL is LA Dodger 1B Jorge Puerta, who might just be ready for the big leagues. Well, not really, of course, but the dude has fanned just twice in over 60 plate appearances while hitting .431/.547/.824. Jeesh!
He's not the only one - Tampa LF German Tapia is hitting .438 with a .604 OBP. And Houston catcher Sandro Gaston has an .855 slug %. But, of course, it's early.
The Yank's Fidel Montero has 19 steals in 19 games - I wonder how many steals he'd have if he was hitting more than .174.
On to the Mets....
The Mets' big bonus baby, Simon Juan, got off to a dismal start, batting just .135 through June 20. But since then, thru July 1, Juan is 11 for 27 with 5 walks, raising his season average to .250. The 6'2", 195 sixteen year old seems to be figuring it out.
But whose DSL performance has been simply dandy for the Mets org? Not Two Men and a Baby, but 2 Shortstops and a Pitcher.
SS? The Mets didn't retain Javier Baez, but they do have Jesus Baez, who is hitting .280 with 5 HRs, 3rd best in the league, and 20 RBIs, second best, and a .574 slug %. He turns 18 next February. Once can hope - when Lindor turns 35, he'll be 24.
Mets SS Dangelo Sarmiento is hitting well at .316/.403/.474. The 6'2" SS turns 18 in January.
His .316 is 52nd best in the DSL, from a point of perspective.
On the pitching side:
Andinson Ferrer continues to impress, with 23 Ks and just 2 hits allowed in 12 innings. The 6'3" 180 righty turned 18 two months ago.
The two Mets' teams are a combined .500 (19-19) with 217 runs scored, or about 5.3 runs per game. That's good - but Boston's squad is freaky - 18-3, with 160 runs scored.
Clearly too early to discern much about these young fellers, but in about a month, stats should become more meaningful.

Simon Juan is 2 for his last 24, so the slump returned.
Tom so what your saying is we don't know yet if he'll be a good "Juan".
Yankees' two DSL teams are # 1 and # 2 in strikeouts by their pitchers. The Mets two teams are 5th and 12th, which is good - but not # 1 and # 2. WHy do the Mets lag?
