The Mack Report - Thursday, July 7th

About Wednesday’s game…

    -A much needed win.

-Yes, there was finally a decent offensive output, but the majority of it came after nine innings.

-Philly lost, but Atlanta really wants to  make us miserable this season.

-David Peterson's performance last night reminded me of what a Mets pitcher told me once. He said that, when he would warm up in the pen prior to a game he was going to pitch in., that 1/3 of the time he was spot on, 1/3 of the time he was crap, and the other third was a work in progress. Peterson last night was a combo of crap and work in progress. He almost hit 100 pitches early in the third inning.

-Hats off to the much criticized pen. 6.2 innings of scoreless innings, that included nine strikeouts.

-And another scoreless inning from Collin Holderman, who has strengthened this pen all season.

We are done looking at expiring contracts on teams going nowhere (since no one made one comment about any of these, this was a part of my post going nowhere too!), let’s take a peek at what our team looks like regarding players that will depart at the end of this season, unless they are extended:

Mack - Lots of work needed here.

Next up,

We will continue looking for an option with the 75th pick in this draft (thanks to Noah Syndergaard).

Brady Neal is a 5-10/180 LHH 17/year old catcher, out if the premier IMG Academy (FL).

MLB.com says this about Neal:

Scouting grades:

Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

Neal was standing out as an underclassman at IMG Academy in Florida in 2021 when he reclassified to be a part of the 2022 Draft class. He’s now one of the top high school catchers with solid tools both at and behind the plate that were on display at summer showcase events like Major League Baseball’s PDP League, and he was the youngest player at the Perfect Game All-American Classic. He’s continued to look like a top three-round type of catching prospect during his senior season.

Neal is a young backstop with the ability to do a lot of things well on both sides of the ball. He has a nice left-handed stroke with an advanced approach at the plate. He uses all fields well and he’s coming into some more power, especially to the pull side.

With a prototypical stocky catcher’s body, Neal has a slightly above-average arm that’s accurate and quick. He does a very good job receiving and has shown an ability to catch a high-level pitching staff at IMG. Committed to LSU, he reminds some of Tucker Barnhart in terms of being a solid all-around backstop without a plus tool.

Mack - Could be a nice addition if Daniel Susac was picked before we had a chance to snag him.

Prospect Live dropped their latest mock draft this week here.

14.  New York Mets

Jace Jung, 2B/3B, Texas Tech

Again, all I keep hearing with the Mets and the first round is splash, splash, splash. Williams is still on the board in this situation, so he’s worth monitoring, but I think they’ll take a college bat here to save some money for more waves in the second round. Jung still on the board is a slam dunk. Keep an eye on Brock Porter and Dylan Lesko with them still on the board, however.

I'm moving on from CC but lets not forget Medina he saved the game. W/O his work there's no tenth.

Hey Mack,
Keep on trucking.

The expiring contract not on the list is the big cheese himself, Mr. deGrom. Olney saying Bravos could be landing spot in 2023. Yuck. This is the biggest decision, the rest will go from there. Bassitt, Walker, and deGrom will cost a fortune.

I'll cut Peterson some slack. He got pushed up with no notice on his prior start and pitched well. Then his wife had a baby and he's been in a world wind between starts physivally and mentally for sure.

Medina has be great and has guts. Holderman too.

I hate to pick on him but Lindor is amongst the worst #3 hitters in baseball and is providing negative D at SS. Buck needs to address that #3 spot or push the GM to add a bat without parting with a premium prospect.

Thanks TP.

Always hoped that these daily reports were going to generate a super amount of comments.

Can't have everything, right?

Hi Mack,

I have always been a pitching fan. My question is, is it better to develop pitchers and sign free agent hitters or to sign free agent pitchers who have had success in the majors and develop hitters? With the draft, is it better to have young power arms and hope in 3 or 4 years they develop? I find putting a team together fascinating and then developing a pipeline where a player or 3 can come up and help.

My opinion

Draft young arms and sign seasoned bats.

Too many veteran arms out there wearing out.

Pitching. Pitching. Pitching

Atlanta. Has been on a great roll, but we got Holderman back…oh yeah, Max too…and maybe Dom Smith.
