Mack’s Daily Minors Recap - 9-4-2022 Games

AAA -

The Syracuse Mets lost their fourth straight game with a 5-1 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. All six runs were scored from the seventh inning onward. With the win, the RailRiders won five games in the six-game series against the Mets.

Syracuse (53-76) stranded a runner in scoring position in five of the game’s final six innings but did start a rally in the top of the ninth. With one out, Mark Vientos singled, and Khalil Lee doubled to place runners at second and third. A JT Riddle single to right field scored Vientos, trimming the deficit to four, 5-1. Gosuke Katoh followed with a laser of a line drive that unfortunately was hit right to Guzmán at first base, who made the catch and touched first for a game-ending double play.

Ronny Mauricio scored on a throwing error on a ball hit by Luke Ritter in the bottom of the 10th as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (22-33, 50-74) defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-4 in walk off fashion on Sunday night at Mirabito Stadium. It was the Ponies fourth walk off win this year and second against the Patriots. Binghamton also won the Double-A Subway Series 9-8.

With a runner advancing to third on a balk in the tenth, Ponies reliever Joe Zanghi (2-1) retired the three batters he faced and worked out of a runner on third and no out jam.

Binghamton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on Hayden Senger’s RBI double scoring Rowdey Jordan. Senger also added another RBI double in the fourth which tied the game at two. The Ponies catcher went 2-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Zach Ashford’s two-run single plating Jordan and Senger put the Ponies ahead 4-2 in the fourth.

New York Mets pitcher Tylor Megill struck out all three batters he faced in the first inning and needed just 11 pitches with nine strikes. Megill also struck out all six batters faced during his two rehab appearances.

The Cyclones closed out the home portion of the 2022 season in style with an 11-5 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Brooklyn win, coupled with a Hudson Valley loss, moves Brooklyn into first place in the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division with just six games remaining. A six-run third inning gave Brooklyn an early 9-0 lead and they held on for the victory after the Rocks scored four in the 9th and had the bags full when the final out was recorded.

The Cyclones jumped on top in the top of the first after a pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Jose Peroza. The Brooklyn second baseman lofted a fly ball deep to center field that allowed Matt Rudick to score the game’s first run and pushed runners to second and third. Stanley Consuegra and William Lugo followed with back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the third, the Brooklyn bats exploded to blow the game wide open. Stanley Consuegra had his second RBI of the afternoon to make it 4-0. But after Jose Mena flied out to left for out number two, that’s when the Cyclones went to work. William Lugo singled up the middle to score Consuegra and then Joe Suozzi tripled into right field before scoring on a passed pall to make it 7-0. Shervyen Newton kept things going with a single prior to Matt Rudick reaching on an error to again put a runner in scoring position. Alex Ramirez ripped a single up the middle to push home Newton and JT Schwartz capped the frame with an RBI single of his own to make it 9-0 after three.

Mike Vasil made the start for Brooklyn, his first since being activated from the Injured List, and tossed 3.0 perfect frames. He gave way to Junior Santos who allowed just one unearned run over his 3.0 innings as the Cyclones took a 9-1 lead into the eighth.

In the bottom of that inning, Justin Guerrera – in his first at-bat since returning to the Cyclones – drilled a two-run home run over the left field wall to extend the Brooklyn lead to 11-1.

Sunday’s contest was the final home game of the 2022 season for the Cyclones, who will head to Winston-Salem to close out the regular season with a six-game series against the Dash. Brooklyn currently holds a ½ game lead over the Hudson Valley Renegades.

If the Cyclones are able to hold on and win the Second Half Title, Brooklyn would open the playoffs on Tuesday, September 13th against the Aberdeen IronBirds at Maimonides Park for the first of a three-game series. Game time would be 6:30 PM.
