Mack’s Daily Minors Recap - 9-6-2022 Games

AAA -

The Syracuse Mets came up just short on Tuesday night, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Rochester Red Wings at NBT Bank Stadium.

Just 20 games remain in the 2022 season after Tuesday night’s game.

Harol González had an excellent outing. The starter for Syracuse (53-77) went five and one-third innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. The right-hander pitched to contact, walking just one batter with two strikeouts.

In the eighth, Syracuse got back in the ballgame. With nobody on base and two outs, Dominic Smith and JT Riddle hit back-to-back solo home runs to slim the deficit from 3-0 to 3-2. They were the fifth and sixth homers of the season for Smith and Riddle respectively. Riddle also hit a home run in the series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last week.

In the ninth, the Mets looked poised for even more dramatics. With a runner on base and one out, Daniel Palka came on as a pinch-hitter looking to end the game with one swing. The slugger almost did, hitting a drive to right field that looked off the bat like a home run to end the game. However, the ball died in the chillier early-September air, allowing Donovan Casey to make the catch mere inches in front of the right-field wall for a pivotal second out in the ninth inning. The next batter, Travis Jankowski, grounded out to end the game and hand Syracuse its fifth straight loss. Three of those five losses have been by just one run.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies opened up their final road series of the year with a commanding 10-2 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (36-22, 66-61) at Hadlock Field Tuesday night. The Ponies had a pair of four-run innings, 15 hits, and three home runs as part of their big offensive night.

Binghamton (23-33, 51-74) began the scoring in the first on a Luke Ritter RBI single that drove home Wyatt Young. In the fourth, Jeremy Vasquez hit an RBI double off the right field wall to make it 2-0 Ponies. Two batters later, Young stepped to the plate and drilled a three-run homer into the Sea Dogs bullpen in right center field to give the Ponies a 5-0 lead and cap off the four-run frame. Young finished 3-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

Binghamton would add on in the eighth as Vasquez hit an RBI single to make it 6-1. The next batter, Nic Gaddis launched a three-run homer off the left center field scoreboard breaking the game open making it 9-1 Ponies and completing their second four-run inning. In the ninth, Rowdey Jordan hit a solo homer over the Maine Monster to make it 10-2 Binghamton. Jordan ended the night 3-5 with three runs scored.

Jose Chacin (4-8) continued his run of excellent starts as he allowed one run on six hits over seven innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. It’s the fourth straight start Chacin has gone at least six innings and not allowed more than two earned runs. It is also his fourth victory in his last five appearances.

Postgame Notes: Vasquez finished 2-5 with two runs scored and two RBI…Hayden Senger was 2-5 with a run scored for his second straight multi-hit game…each member of the Rumble Ponies lineup had at least one hit…Young’s homer was his fifth of the year and Gaddis home run was his second.
