The Mack Report - Tylor Megill, The Batting Glove, JT Schwartz, Jeff McNeil, Layonel Ovalles, Brandon Nimmo, Omar de los Santos, Pitcher DIGS, Marge "Should Be" Schott

Fred Aaron is Pops Culture @fredforthemets

The Mets had an opportunity to add key offense & bullpen pieces at the deadline but instead went out & got 2 beer league DHs, a replacement level reliever & an outfielder who was about to be DFA’d by the Reds because they wanted to hold onto prospects who are rotting away in AAA

Mack - It's amazing how quick the Twitter fan base can turn on a team that has played 17 games above .500 since June 1st.

The Mets can't help that the Braves are "Silky Sullivan".

Silky was a race horse back in the day that would run the first half of the race a million lengths behind the leader. Then, his jockey would turn the afterburners on and off Silky would go to win the race my a hair.

Let's face it fans. You root for a great team but Atlanta is easily the better team in the NL East.

Michael Mayer @michaelmayer22

Tylor Megill tossed another perfect inning tonight in his second rehab appearance for Double-A Binghamton.

He’s faced 6 hitters

He’s struck out 6 hitters

Mack - I've said this before. I never understand why, if you can throw rehab innings in the minors, why not just throw them in the majors?

Mike Puma @NYPost_Mets

The Mets are 50-33 since June 1.

The Braves are 61-24 over that stretch.

Mack - Like I said, fans.

You simply can't stop a team that has played at a 37 game above .500 since June 1st.

You just can't.

Custom Cards OTD @custom_baseball

OTD in 1965, Ken Harrelson invented the batting glove. After 27 holes and changing his grip, he developed a blister. He wore his red golf glove and yanked a Whitey Ford pitch for a homer (twice). He was heckled by the #Yankees (all NY players wore them to mock Hawk next game).

Brooklyn Cyclones @BKCyclones

JT Schwartz is just tearing it up for the ‘Clones.

Over his last 12 games he’s batting .407 (22-54) with 11 runs scored, six doubles and 7 RBI.

Mack - I loved when the Mets drafted Schwartz. Sort of a poor man’s Alonzo.

Jeff McNeil has now passed John Olerud for the 34th most hits in Mets history.

Mack - I couldn’t be happier for this guy’s success.

Ernest Dove @ernestdove

St. Lucie Mets 19 year old P Layonel Ovalles threw 3 scoreless innings allowing 1 H, 2 K tonight for the save. 94-95 MPH with a really good breaking ball that needs consistency.

Mack - Ernest, Tom Brennan, and I have all written about this BLUE prospect.

You need to keep an eye on this one.

Mathew Brownstein @MBrownstein89

Brandon Nimmo has the third-highest centerfielder fWAR this season, and the highest in the National League at 4.1.

A question from reader Bill Metsiac:

Omar de los Santos

He's playing in his 110th game of 2022. Hitting around  .270, with 16 HR, 23 Doubles, and SEVENTY SBs.

Why is he still at St. Lucie?

Pitcher DIGS @DigsPitcher

NL DIGS+ Leaders (min 5 GS)

1. deGrom #LGM 171

2. Strider #ForTheA 149

3. Scherzer #LGM 141

4. Nola #RingTheBell 141

5. Fried #ForTheA 141

6. Alcantara #MakeItMiami 140

7. Rodon #SFGameUp 137

8. Burnes #ThisIsMyCrew 135

9. Kershaw #AlwaysLA 135

10. Wheeler #RingTheBell 127

Marge "Should Be" Schott

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/656251-craziest-scandals-and-stories-in-mlb-history -

Perhaps Schott was inspiration for former Braves pitcher John Rocker.

The former owner of the Cincinnati Reds made slurs against Blacks, Jews, Asians and homosexuals.

If that wasn't enough, she expressed a sympathetic attitude to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

She was banned in 1996 by Commissioner Bud Selig and became the only woman ever to be banned. Unfortunately, she was reinstated in 1998.

Mack - Schott was a piece of work.

Combines with Pete Rose, they were works of non-art.

To answer a couple of Mack's comments here:

The reason for rehabs in the minors is to see if they're ready to return to the ML team without giving them a roster spot prematurely. Some, like Lucchesi and Megill, have been perfect so far and could be ready very soon. But others need more time and work.

As for Schwartz, before declaring him a poor man's Alonso I'd wait until he shows power. He's been hitting like the August version of Pete, though, with some hard-hit singles and a few doubles.

Poor man’s Alonso? This guy won’t hit 50 homers in his minor league career and ML (if he has one) career.

Thus

Poor man

Braves are easily the best team? Two losses and you’re another Debbie D!

Joel Diaz still needs a lot of work but in a few years I think he might truly be legit. Lots of development needed but I like him more than I liked Junior Santos. I like Diaz out pitch breaking ball.

I'm a Mets fan for life, but the Braves are a far better team. We simply do not stack up well against them. Be great if we manage to finish ahead of them, but don't bet the farm.

JT Schwartz started slow, got hot, got hurt, returned hit, He and William Lugo, who also started slow, are legit prospects. Brooklyn on an offensive tear.
