Tom Brennan: Mets’ Best Young Prospect 1B?

 As a Collegian in Maryland

Who’s the best first baseman in the Mets minors, prospect-age, of course.

JT SCHWARTZ?

Hmmm…Low power output.

RYAN CLIFFORD?

Nearly 80 minor league games at 1B, so he is not just an OF.

But he strikes out a lot.  A whole lot. 114 times in 75 games since the Mets acquired him.

So…pick one.

No? You’d rather continue shopping?

OK, how about a 3rd choice?

Say, a guy who is hitting .295/.388/.550 for an unlikely low-offense team, Brooklyn?

Averaging an RBI every 5 at bats? Works for me.

And..he plays both 1B…AND 3B?

Just 2 errors in 30 games in the field this year?

Just call him Keith Brooks, then.

Player of the week in the So. Atlantic League for his recent play?

And just 25 Ks in 152 PAs, in a league where that sort of rate is excellent?

Who cares if he was just a 9th rounder in 2023, if he can do all that?

His name?  Nick. No, not Morabito.

Nick Lorusso.

So, Schwartz and Clifford have some competition. Tough competition.

Right now, I’d say Luke Ritter is the best 1B prospect, but is older and has been K prone, Improving in that regard, for sure, in 2024, but of the younger up-and-comers….?

Nick Lorusso.

OH, YEAH…

Mets lose a doubleheader. Of course. Only good news was Tylor Megill was a beast in game 1 vs. mighty LAD, with 7 shutout, 3 hit innings, with a walk and 9 Ks.

AND…

Mighty Nick Morabito went 4 for 5, with 3 runs, 3RBIs, a HR, .371/.491/.479. I think he’s good.

IN THE NEVER-ENDING BAD NEWS DEPT….

Saw this in the NY Post.

Jett Williams….has what the club is calling a right wrist TFCC sprain that already required one cortisone shot.  Williams is expected to receive a second injection after the first did not cure the soreness.

SURGERY MAY BE NECESSARY?? Hope not.

I still think your first base "prospect " is Vientos

An astonishing stat for my upcoming Sunday article….Mets at home are hitting .200. Dead last. Kansas City is first in that regard and is hitting .275.

Not surprised dept: Jett probably needs surgery and anyone taking bets on Senga going the same route but they'll probably wait till Aug./Sept to decide so he won't be back till next Sept maybe. Cohen would be making alot more money if he bought a Hospital. I have this picture in my mind of Stevie just losing it in his suite after another debacle just took place and yelling "Do over Do over" because it worked for me when I was a kid. The one thing that I guess is good is we're already past the point for management trying to sell the "were still in it line" because if y/day's disaster wasn't bad enough in the second game it would have been better to play a bunch of college kids because even though they would have surely lost at leaast they would have played their hearts out something our over priced major leaguers aren't doing. Embarrassing.

IMO

Jett needs to go to the OR. STAT

The Mets are not going to put together a decent prospect laden outfield until 2026

Until then use secondary AAA prospects and one year signees

Gary and Mack, this describes his injury (TFCC) and solutions. I never heard of TFCC before. But, he is Mets property, so we now have heard of it:

I hear that Edwin Diaz needs surgery for a brain impingement also.

Mack, Vientos to 1B since I still see him as a prospect until the Mets give him a proper chance.

I read somewhere that the Mets are now open to trading Pete Alonso and try to re-sign him in the off season. Why would the Mets want to bring back a player that is exhibit A of their failure?.

Stupidity maybe?
