Good morning.
Got some time on my hands, so I thought I would come up with some trade scenarios that would make sense this year for both the Mets and the team they would be trading with.
The first today would be trading designated hitter JD Martinez. Yes, he has been one of the more productive bats this year, but he's getting 12mil on a one year and would cost a hell of a lot more next season.
I'm not sure at this point who the 2025 DH will be for the Mets, but I need to save this kind of money for my Blow It Up plan.
Where to, you say?
Well. both San Francisco and Seattle have DH bats that are simply not producing at an acceptable level.
Both these teams are currently in the playoff race and could use a JD boost in their lineup.
Seattle has two top SS/2B prospects. The MLB has Cole Young as their 39th prospect and Colt Emerson as their 87th.
At A ball, Emerson is: 70-AB, 2-HR,..271 and Young is hitting .255 in 145-AB with 3-HR at AA.
Either would be fine for me as a future second base prospect.
Also in Seattle is an attractive outfield prospect. Lazaro Montes is currently hitting .325 in 154-AB, 7-HR, 44-RBI in A ball.
As for the Giants... I like two prospects:
1B/OF Bryce Eldridge - A ball: 111-AB, 5-HR, .279
LHP Carson Whisenhunt - AAA ball: 0-3, 6.37, 35.1-IP, 55-K
2023 in A/A+/AA: 16-ST, 2.45, 58.2-IP, 83-K

We hear about the trading deadline daily as the point to make trades. If a team such as the Giants or Mariners want to win their division or go to the playoffs should they not make those trades now rather than later when they may lose the opportunity to be successful? We are told a team does not want to make a trade and give up prospects for a "rental". Make the trade and have that player for the rest of the season. Would the Mets get back less quality prospects now than at the trading deadline?

I think, with each passing loss, a big sell off makes sense. I think they need to decide how big, and prepare to execute. So I will politely pass on your request if the proposed trade is good. Stearns will need to make sense of what will be left players-wise after a sell off and who will be brought backin trades to reposition for the future.
If, however, Peterson comes back strong today, suddenly the rotation looks pretty strong, and maybe some of the losers in the rotation battle get moved to the pen and the pen then looks decent. Then, if the hitters can never get hot at the same time maybe they go on a run of significance. I’m not expecting that run of significance to occur, but if it did, it’s still too early to sell. Would trade Pete, Jeff, JD, Marte, even Nimmo, and Ottavino, at a minimum.
It is beyond frustrating that Jet Williams may need wrist surgery, still described as possible, typically it seems like probably probable is more like it. And that Gilbert decided to run his way out of two months of the season by being too aggressive/not smart. Has picked it up, and in the last 23 games are sitting 300. So I would definitely think of calling him up in a month, when someone gets traded. Of course, when Senga went down at the beginning of spring training, knowing he was now a met, I wondered how excruciatingly long it would be before he came back. I wasn’t wrong to wonder that. If he had come back in May, thanks would look very different in terms of making a run, lastly, they need to figure out if Edwin is damaged goods, long-term, and whether to trade him as well. Maybe with sprout and Tidwell in the not too distant Horizon as legitimate pitchers, Edwin is expendable. Of course, I’d like to see him right himself because I’d like to see him stay and be the real Edwin again.
D J, I will let Mack answer that. But, without delving into it, I think they need to drop 30 million tonight hit the draft penalty again for next year, the 10th slot drop, and drop 70 million to get under the cap and reset the tax. I think 70MM would be very hard to reach and would really require a very early start to sell offs, and might still be impossible to achieve since 1/3 of the season has already been “spent”, but that is going to be a key factor when they try to figure out who to trade and when, I think even more so then what might be just a marginal difference and prospects, depending on when you make the trades .

Not bringing in Diaz in the ninth of game one speaks volumes and with no BP were done. JD should never have happened Vientos should have been the DH since ST but if you can get something for him do it. Also how about Marte to the Bravos to replace Acuna and by the way his brother is heating up in Cuse. Tom what does "has picked it up and in the last 23 games are sitting 300" mean?
The team is currently pacing close to a 100 loss season

Lazaro Montes sounds good as does Eldridge.
Edwin Diaz reminds me of Benitez. Great arm, great stuff, no control, no coj0nes.
The way the Mets are playing right now, they should continue to use Diaz as the closer and hope he puts it together long enough to become desirable for another team. If not, then the Mets can grab hold of last place and never let it go.
Apparently Cohen bought the Mets with a transferable curse from the Wilpons. Even when he tries to buy a championship by over spending, all the stars will line up for key players to get hurt or badly underperform.
I am beginning to think that our newly minted manager is missing brain cells and baseball logic.
When the Mets do deceide to sell, I feel they should focus on OF, 3B and SP. I feel we have enough middle infielders in the minors.
Mack, What do you think the Mets can get for Alonso, McNeil. Do you think that Lindor is even tradeable with is salary?
I think Diaz is highly capable of producing a great inning going forward. I just don't know if I have the confidence in him as a closer and I sure as he'll don't want to pay this kind of money to someone that can't close

I’ll tell you about the trade offers. I like Whisenhunt, but that’s it.
No team will reach deep to buy a rental this early. Only very motivated buyers will, and those buyers have yet to be determined. The most important thing when making a trade is to make sure that you get a good piece, but something you can use. Getting more middle infielders doesn’t seem necessary when the system is full of them and why would you want a first baseman when you don’t even know about your own two candidates (Vientos and Baty) and your own free agent.
I look at the Tigers that want to win badly and have lots of pitching, the Royals that want to win and have lots or pitching, the Mariners that want to win but I don’t know what they have, the Red Sox that are facing a huge fan backlash to win this year, the Blue Jays that are running out of time with Vladdy and friends together and just bought Springer last year, the Astros who look at their window as closing, maybe the Twins and Rays, the Cubs and Giants are desperate, and the Yankees who have no choice but to win.
Get what you can get for Martinez. He shouldn't have been signed anyway. Anything you get back is a plus

What are your thoughts on Hayden Birdsong from SF Giants? Possible future closer.
WHisenhunt seems the most attractive, based on his K rate. Unless an outfielder has a potential to be above average, we currently have Gimpy Gilbert and Nick Morabito, and possibly Rhylan Thomas.
Lazaro Montes has more power than Morabito, but Morabito is far superior in speed. If the Mets do trade for Montes, trade Gilbert, who is 4(?) years older.

Looking at Lazaro Montes a little more, I am not sure Seattle would take Gilbert and Acuna for him straight up. I would trade for him, if possible, and trade the much smaller Gilbert.

I have hated this group since day 1... Alonso was never a superstar... but i thought he could be the Tino Martinez to a big team... His time is pass...
what frustrates me most is the holding on to guys way longer than their value... trade of Alonso, the 5 aces, to lose someone for nothing.... Who has any clue in the organization.
Trade everyone and get anything for them... What i worry most now is that we couldn't even get players to come as the highest bidders...
I definitely dont see soto coming and with Pitcher volatility should we sign sign a burns...
to me the must leave are Nimmo, Alonso, and I would trade Senga if he shows health... these are the highest value... so i am looking to maximize return...
