B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

Fresh up from Tampa (High-A), LHP Wilkin De La
Rosa had it all working in his first AA start. De La Rosa struck
out a season-high nine men in a season-best six scoreless
innings to pick up the 9-2 win. It appeared as though the BMets
would be shutout going into the ninth, but with two outs,
Binghamton was able to get a couple men on base for Jonathan
Malo, who drove in two with a single up the middle off of
Josh Schmidt. They were the first two runs of the year given up
by Schmidt. Binghamton starter Dylan Owen threw a seasonlong
six innings giving up six unearned runs to take the loss.
The unearned runs came in the third when Ruben Tejada
committed an error at short with the bases loaded and two
outs, allowing a run to score, and then the proceeding hitter,
Jorge Vazquez, launched a grand slam to right-center to put
the Thunder out in front 5-0.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Jose Sanchez is returning
to the site of his only win this season, Waterfront Park.
Sanchez threw a season-long six innings giving up three runs
back on April 10 against Trenton to win his first start. That has
been his only quality start this season. Last time out, however,
Sanchez threw well to the tune of 5.2 innings giving up two
runs, and left with a chance to win May 4 at home against
Portland. For the season, he is 1-3 with a 7.40 ERA in 24.1
innings. The typically reliable Sanchez is coming a 13-win
campaign in a B-Mets’ uniform in 2009.

RHP Zach McAllister will make his fifth start of the season
tonight for Trenton. He was skipped over his last time through
the rotation due to rainouts at Bowie. His last start came April
29 against Connecticut when he threw a season-low four
innings taking a loss. He gave up three runs on five hits with a
season-high four walks in the outing. He started against the
Binghamton April 10 and got a no-decision going five innings
giving up three runs. McAllister is considered the sixth-best
prospect in the Yankees organization by Baseball America
after spending 2008 between Charleston (Low-A) and Tampa
(High-A) totaling a 2.08 ERA between the two with 14 wins.

STREAKING AT THE PLATE:

Thanks to a late-inning double in
last night’s game, Lucas Duda extended his hitting streak to
eight games. He is hitting .355 (11-31) in his last eight and
has hits in 10 of 11 overall (.381, 16-42). Entering play today,
Duda ranks third in the Eastern League with a .450 on-base
percentage.

TEJADA TEARIN’ IT UP:

Shortstop Ruben Tejada has reached
base in an Eastern League-best 18 straight games. Despite
seeing his five-game hitting streak come to an end last night,
Tejada was able to manage two walks in four tries
